Don’t Freak Out But There’s New Art for the Sailor Moon Reboot

This is too much for my fragile nerd heart to take.

Yesterday the official website for the upcoming Sailor Moon reboot published an 8-day countdown to…. something. But the best laid plans of mice and talking moon cats often go awry, and a bunch of intrepid fans uncovered the big surprise anyway: new images revealing the art style and title of the series.

The image has since been taken down from the official Sailor Moon website due to the leak, but to be fair, that’s kind of what you get when you give a super secret image the URL of “http://sailormoon-official.com/img/animation/anime.png.” C’mon, that’s like using the password “12345.” Below is the image, as well as a translation of the original Japanese text that describes the series’ plot and lists all the writing staff, as translated to English by Miss Dream:

As you can see, we also have a new logo and title for the reboot: Sailor Moon Crystal. The art itself is strikingly similar to Naoko Takeuchi’s original work in the manga, right down to the design of Sailor Moon’s brooch, choker, and headgear, which were simplified in the original anime to cut back on drawing time. It’s absolutely gorgeous and I can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s fully animated. Also, the fact that all the inner senshi’s planets — Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus — also appear in this promotional artwork gives me a whole mess of feelings. I’m just so excited, guys. So! Excited!

Sailor Moon Crystal is set to launch on the streaming service NicoNicoDouga this July.
