Comics to Read After Last Night’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode “Turn, Turn, Turn”

Three turns. There's three of them. Three.

SHIELD

SHIELD changed things up this week by having more than one interesting thing happen in an episode, but they stuck to their guns in terms of pulling a lot more from the Marvel Cinematic Universe than its comic book one. Still, I’ll do my best to give you some interesting follow up reading material.

The episode was the big tie in with Captain America: Winter Soldier, so if you haven’t seen the movie yet, there might be some spoilers. I haven’t seen it yet either, so I’m not really sure exactly what got spoiled, but a lot happened. Probably best to just steer clear until you see Winter Soldier.

Enough warning? Alright then. Go read:

You’re right, loyal reader, this was the first comic I recommended you read after Agents of SHIELD first premiered last year. Since you’ve no doubt already read it, you might be wondering why I’m telling you to read it again. It’s because of the quippy little exchange between Agents Coulson and Garrett about the Hydra oath.

They decide the line is “Cut off a head, and two more shall take its place!” but they also throw out the possibility that it’s cutting off a limb, not a head. That’s not just cutesy Whedon dialogue; it’s a throwback to the original oath as it appeared in Strange Tales #135 where Hydra first appeared. Originally, it was cutting off a limb, but it seems its since been updated for the MCU.

It’s also the only comic book reference I could find in this episode. The tie in to Winter Soldier obviously meant a heavy draw from the MCU this week, so I wasn’t expecting to have that much to go on.
