The Ole Miss-Admiral Ackbar Commercial Loved By A Nation

You may remember that the Ole Miss Rebels are looking for a new on-field mascot. And the reason you might remember this may well be that for a while, one of the most widely-supported choices was none other than Star Wars’ Admiral Ackbar.

Sadly, that ship has sailed (this lists the final five choices as “a land shark, a bear, a horse, a lion or two characters named Hotty and Toddy”), but now the Ackbar campaign lives on through what appears to be a universally-loved ESPN commercial from last night – and it’s not hard to see why.

Admiral Ackbar Doing Well in Early Student Voting for Ole Miss Mascot

This past weekend, we reported that a campaign was underway at Ole Miss to make Admiral Ackbar the university’s new mascot. As geeked out as we were by the possibility of the beloved, squidlike Star Wars Rebel Alliance Commander of “It’s a trap!” fame leading a different set of Rebels on the playing field, we were skeptical that students would want to oust their current plantation-owning semi-mascot, Colonel Reb.

Well, color us happily surprised: an early report from TMZ on yesterday’s voting says that Ackbar is currently the “favorite” among the student body.

It’s true that colleges occasionally become dissatisfied with their mascots and swap them out for a new one. Ordinarily, schools go straight for another conventional college mascot — but could Admiral Ackbar, the squid-like Star Wars character, be poised to become the new mascot of Ole Miss?

That’s right, Ole Miss (The University of Mississippi) — the school with a slaveowning plantation owner as its mascot. Will the undergraduates of Dixie cast off offensiveness for absurdity?
