Battlestar Galactica

Massive Battlestar Galactica Ship Gloriously Reproduced With LEGOs

This incredible model is the creation of Garry King, who might be the man to go to when building a LEGO replica of a Battlestar Galactica ship. His latest creation, Battlestar Berzerk, is truly massive: 14 inches tall, 24 inches wide, and a whopping 73 inches long. For reference, if this were stood on its end it would 4 inches taller than me. The huge scale of the model means that King could include amazing detail across the Berzerk’s hull, and it shows. While we don’t know how many pieces went into making the ship, we do know that it weighs 54 pounds.

Now, BSG fans may be scratching their heads, struggling to recognize this particular ship. Apparently the Berzerk only appeared briefly in the first episode, so you’d probably have to go frame-by-frame to catch a clear view of it. Which, I think, makes King’s accomplishment all the more impressive. Read on below to see images of this behemouth.

Battlestar Galactica: The Ride

Yes, THE RIDE.  It opens this week at Universal Studios: Singapore as part of “Sci-Fi City.

Here’s Universal’s description of the BSG rollercoaster:

Engage in the ultimate inter-galactic battle between good and evil on the world’s tallest duelling roller coasters. Themed after the hit television series Battlestar GalacticaTM, the attraction asks riders to choose a side – Human or Cylon – and then experience intense aerial combat between two spacecraft.

The Cylon Raider is a suspended roller coaster that will turn your world upside down as it runs through vertical loops, cork screws and cobra rolls. The Human Viper Mark II is a seated roller coaster that zooms at 90km/h and propels you fourteen storeys into the air while pursuing the enemy. Riders on both coasters will experience unbelievable thrills as they twist, turn & narrowly avoid collision:

This Just In: Syfy To Create Another Battlestar Galactica Spinoff

With Caprica barely out of the gates, Syfy has announced that it’s interested in spawning yet another Battlestar Galactica spinoff.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, VP of Original Programming Mark Stern hinted that the new series would capitalize on Battlestar’s success as a space opera.  In other words, the new show might take audiences back into the seat of a Viper, something that has been notably missing from Caprica.  While evasive with any concrete details, Stern sounded optimistic about the potential spinoff:

BSG Does Beastie Boys in “Galactica: Sabotage”

A Battlestar Galactica and Beastie Boys fan created a tribute to both in “Galactica: Sabotage,” a nearly shot-for-shot replication of the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” music video with clips from BSG.

We’d describe our attitude towards the geekdom-meets-hip-hop conceit as “guarded”: not that it isn’t a great idea, but we’ve been burned by it too many times before. But this is truly well done — and the Beastie Boys are huge geeks anyway. Bonus points to the mashup creator for choosing “Sabotage” as the mashup song over “Intergalactic,” because come on, that would’ve been hokey.

Space Memorabilia Alert: Artifacts from the Soviet Space Program on the Auction Block

If you’re still trying to decide whether or not you can handle the $200,000 price tag for a ticket to outer space on Virgin Galactic, you might consider warming up by purchasing your very own Russian Sokol KV-2 Space Suit.  Sudden rapid cabin depressurization?  Not a problem.

Waddington’s, an auction house in Toronto, has just acquired a large private collection of memorabilia and artifacts from the Soviet Space Program that will be going to auction this month.  Among the collection’s more unique items are an Anti-Gravity Human Waste Disposal Unit, a Mir Space Station Control Console, and blueprints for Space Shuttle Buran’s payload bay–pretty much everything you need to launch a makeshift space program from your garage.

Flashing Your Geek

I have a very good friend. We’re both writers, both geeks, and both talkers, so much so that we’ve developed a number of inside jokes that serve us as conversational shorthand. I would like to share one of them with the greater geek community. It refers to a certain sort of social situation, and we call it:
