Captain America

The Comic-Con Exclusive Thor Poster

We’re not going to Comic-Con, and it stands to reason (probabilitywise) that you aren’t either. Well, here’s one of many things you’re missing out on: one of two Con exclusive posters of concept art for the upcoming Thor (above) and Captain America (below) movies.

Okay, so it’s just two pictures, and they’re not even big enough to be desktop images. But there’s more!

Just In Time for Independence Day: Captain America Is Back In Business

Captain America was brought back from the dead a little while ago, but since then he hasn’t been doing much in the Marvel universe. His protege Bucky has been wearing the suit and doing the job.

Writer Ed Brubaker is finally giving Steve Rogers something to do. You can pick up the first issue of Steve Rogers: Super Soldier this week, on Thursday.

Yes, that’s right. Remember everyone: Monday is a bank holiday, so new comics come out on Thursday.

Captain America Movie Costume: And then there Were Pictures, and they Were Good

A few days ago, fanboys and fangirls across the Internet got very excited by a words-only description of Captain America‘s costume in the upcoming Joe Johnston movie of the same name, courtesy of JoBlo.com, which got an exclusive look at “one of the approved costume tests.” This led to a flurry of fan-designed costumes based on the description, some of which seemed more accurate than others.

Well, Ain’t It Cool News got their hands on some illustrations which claimed to be the real thing, and JoBlo’s Mike Sampson confirmed that they were the pictures he saw. This doesn’t necessarily mean that these will be exactly what we’ll see onscreen when Captain America hits theaters in 2011 — this is a costume test, not the final thing. And we have yet to see Cap’s second costume from the film, which Sampson describes as “a costume designed by the Army for his initial USO appearances that’s slightly more flashy and a nod to the original design.” Still, we’re definitely fans of the test costumes, which convey retro cool without being too fussily historical.

The Captain America Movie Costume In Words Only

There is a distinct progression in fan attention when a new superhero movie comes out. First it’s the writer and director, then the casting of the main lead, the casting of the villain, and, eventually, somewhere down the line, we get a look at the costume.

Normally, we wouldn’t get too excited until some pictorial evidence was offered for the internet to excrete masonry over, but JoBlo‘s incredibly detailed description of “one of the approved costume tests” for the new Captain America movie has got us interested.

Samuel L. Jackson Says: S.H.I.E.L.D. Movie on Its Way

In an interview with Radio Big Boy, Samuel L. Jackson revealed that:

The Avengers‘ should start shooting some time next year, and then some time after that there’ll be a big ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ movie.

That’s right. A S.H.I.E.L.D. movie.

For those unfamiliar (and I had to go nose around on Wikipedia in order to make sure I had my facts straight), this would be something like Samuel L. Jackson playing an immortal James Bond who fights things from other dimensions.

Try to tell me how that wouldn’t be awesome.

Matthew Vaughn is Directing X-Men: First Class in a Year

It’s official: Matthew Vaughn, director of Kick-Ass and Stardust, is at the helm of X-Men: First Class, the reboot of the X-Men movie franchise. This new prequel film (a long the same world-exploring lines as Wolverine: Origins) will “chart the epic beginning of the X-Men saga,” which probably means Professor X and Magneto as young rebellious allegory-for-civil-rights-leaders.

This dashes our dreams of watching a movie where the X-Men sit at the front of an airplane for two and a half hours, enjoying complementary drinks.

Marvel Wants B- and C-List Studios to Take Care of Their B- and C-List Characters

As far as superheroes go, the big studios tend to favor the ones that come with the most CGI, the biggest explosions, and the most renown. It’s easier to get a studio to pour billions of dollars into a movie if the average person on the street has heard of the main character, Batman, Spider-Man, Captain America, or the X-Men, for example. Big heroes, for big money.

According to CHUD.com, Marvel is experimenting to see if this is a true x=y equation: maybe smaller money could work for smaller characters. We don’t mean like the Atom or Henry Pym -

Well, actually we do.

RoganJosh’s Mod Art Superheroes

The first mindblowing thing about the art of RoganJosh at ModHero.com is how beautiful it is. Each print breaks the character down to its iconic essence; a superhero in well composed shape and color. The second mindblowing thing about it is that every piece is for sale on Etsy as a print, for under $20.

The only downside is that he hasn’t done Captain Marvel. But I can wait. Some highlights after the jump.
