Frank Gehry Chess Set is Funky, Costs $25,000

Frank Gehry is probably better known for his architectural works, which include the Guggenheim in Spain and the rippling 8 Spruce Street tower in lower Manhattan. He's less known for his chess playing, but it apparently interested him enough to create this set for Tiffany and Co. for the bargain-basement price of $25,000.00.

3D Printed Chess Set Combines Together to Form Awesome Fighting Robot

Chess is all well and good, but Joseph Larson was distraught by the lack of giant fighting robots in the ancient board game. He fixed that with his 3D-printable chess pieces that combine together to form a super-powered robot ala Voltron. Forget Kasparov and Deep Blue -- this is the ultimate test for chess grand masters.

Play Physical Chess Over the Internet With Robotic Chessboards

Even though digital chess played over the Internet has been a common occurrence long before even phones and video game consoles were adept at accessing said Internet, there's still something special about playing chess on a physical chessboard over the Internet. Especially when your opponent's pieces move without any kind of physical interaction. YouTube user FunGowRightNow12 created just this type of chess set, with the much larger goal of enabling people to play board games with each other across the world, regardless of physical location.

Happy Anniversary Deep Blue, Sorry Kasparov

On this day, 16 years ago, a major blow was delivered to the ego of humanity when IBM's chess playing computer Deep Blue beat Garry Kasparov in the first of the legendary series of games. This was the first time that a computer had defeated a reigning chess world champion in a standard tournament game. Though Kasparov would come out ahead of Deep Blue in the overall match -- two draws and three wins -- it was short lived. When the two next met over a chessboard in 1997, Deep Blue won the match. Deep Blue was a demonstration to the world what modern computing was capable of, and paved the way for other headline grabbing computers like Watson. I, for one, welcome our chess-playing computer overlords.

Aliens Vs. Predator Chess Set the Most Civilized Way for Aliens and Predators to Fight

Aliens Vs. Predator may have been a pretty terrible movie, but the concept it embodies has a lot of merit. Especially on the chessboard. That was, perhaps, the thinking behind this amazing chess set from Joker-Laugh, which features the familiar "faces" of everyone's favorite acid-bleeding xenomorphs and mandibled hunters. My only question is if the transparent Predator pieces get some kind of bonus for being invisible -- it only seems fair! See more images of both sides, arrayed for battle, after the break.

Chess Set Made of Chalk Allows Sore Losers to Pour Water On the Board Instead of Flip it Over

This chalk chess set is a neat thing that exists, which you can make exist anywhere you want if you pony up $19.95 over at Useful Things. Originally made by the visually unappealingly named SUCK UK, they're sold out, so Useful Things is the way to go for now. All pieces stand 1.5 inches high, though the King towers over the others in a royal way with an extra 2 inches. SUCK UK encourages the cheating capability of the pieces: Draw the board in chalk, but then redraw the board the way you like with the very pieces themselves when your opponent looks away. More pictures of the dissolvable-by-water set after the jump.

This Doctor Who Chess Set is Adorable

DeviantART user EldalinSkywalker felt that Doctor Who fan art is a little too cluttered with drawings and paintings, so she combined everyone's favorite Time Lord with everyone's favorite game played with clocks. The result is this adorable Doctor Who chess set, complete with Dalek and Adipose pawns, David Tennant (because he's the best) and the Master as the Kings, and, in a clever touch, the Weeping Angels as Rooks. Yes, the setup in the above picture has the Kings and Queens out of alignment, but it's okay. The pieces are still pretty incredible. The set was on sale, for the pricey price of $535, but at what price fandom?

Your Wall Will Appreciate This Vertical Chess Set More Than It Would a Painting

Purveyor of neat things you want that are too expensive, Hammacher Schlemmer, has a chess set for sale that acts more like an interactive painting rather than a board that one opens and sets down on a table. The vertical chess set hangs on a wall, and each row has its own little shelf on which the pieces can stay upright. The board is intended for a long game -- walk down the hallway once or twice a day and make your move -- and comes with a "last move" marker, so your opponent knows that it is his or her turn, and that you aren't pulling a fast one.

Skeleton Key Chess Set Knows the Key to Our Hearts is a Skeleton Key Chess Set

Designed by Dave Pickett, this Skeleton Key Chess Set replaces each piece with a unique skeleton key that locks into place on the board. Each key is made of brass, with one set of keys finished in liver sulfur petina and the other sandblasted. The board is made from curly maple and walnut and awesome. One of those three ingredients may or may not be tangible. Check out some more pictures of the set after the jump.

Hand-Sculpted The Legend of Zelda Chess Set

This chess set, using hand-crafted pieces from The Legend of Zelda, took designer Ben Howard of Fizz Man Industries three months to complete. Each piece is unique, even the ChuChu pawns, all of which are in a different pose. Howard seems to have opted not to go with any of the realistic Zelda design styles, but just like with the cartoony Zeldas, the cartoony style doesn't affect the tried-and-true chess gameplay, right? The Zelda chess pieces were commissioned, but Howard doesn't seem to make clear if the Windwaker-style design was at the behest of the buyer. Before you head on past the break to see more pictures of the set, yes, the king and queen are in the wrong spots, but give Howard a break, he spent three months slaving away making ChuChu pawns.

Someone Made 3 Person Chess, Like in The Big Bang Theory

Character Shelden Cooper on the sitcom The Big Bang Theory invented a game of three person chess that contained two new pieces with a very particular set of rules. Whether or not one happens to find The Big Bang Theory a laugh riot or mind-numbing skull-drivel that makes one swear off television because it's so bad that it makes other shows bad by proxy, three person chess is awesome.

The rules of the non-sitcom three man chess are fairly simple, and they basically amount to "regular chess but with another person." Most of the additional rules -- aside from the addition of border control rules -- are simply guidelines regarding how to deal with the circle in the center of the board, and they generally result in "just ignore it."

Armenia Makes Chess a Mandatory School Subject

Armenia is a country mad for chess, having won a number of world chess competitions in recent years. Now, the country will impart a love of chess to the next generation, committing $1.43 million to an educational program that will see chess taught as a school curriculum subject for children six and above, who will study chess in classrooms for two hours per week. While the country is framing the program in terms of Armenia's world competitiveness in chess, it's fair to expect that there will be broader educational benefits: Education ministry official Arman Aivazian said that chess lessons would "foster schoolchildren's intellectual development" and teach students to "think flexibly and wisely."
