It wouldn’t be Comic Con with out some major news about the big bad comic book movies coming out in the next couple of years, and this year Marvel is ruling the roost. Get people excited.

Vertigo to Publish Canceled Comic Hellblazer: Shoot

Vertigo announced today that they are beginning a new series called Vertigo Resurrected, which they will use to showcase some of their impressive archive of “horror, crime, war, western, fantasy, urban memoir, science fiction or reality based” stories; resurrecting, if you will, some of their greatest “rarely seen tales.”  First off the bat is a story that actually can’t be resurrected, because it was never published in the first place: Hellblazer: Shoot, written by Warren Ellis.

The Alan Moore Interview You Have to Read

Alan Moore no longer pays any heed to superheroes. In an interview with British music newspaper The Stool Pigeon recently, the creator of the watershed comic Watchmen spoke about the works which made him an international superstar in the comics industry. Despite his stature, Moore is a noted recluse and has insisted strongly on distancing himself from the numerous film adaptations of his work (From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Constantine, V for Vendetta, and Watchmen), which have all fallen short of the nuanced originals.

The eccentric writer has now also distanced himself, apparently, from the comic book superhero, “[suspecting] that a lot of superheroes now are basically about the unfair fight.” We’ve collected just a few of his particularly interesting quotes, including his thoughts on the Internet, the iconic Guy Fawkes mask showing up at protests, and real-life superheroes:

Confirmed: Edward Norton Not In The Avengers

According to Hitfix‘s Marvel sources, the House That Stan Built is not going to ask Edward Norton to reprise his role as the Hulk for The Avengers, and will instead be casting an unknown in the role. This has confused many people who have been following Marvel’s ambitious project of injecting universe continuity into its movies, because, by all accounts, Norton was very interested in the role.

From Hitfix:

I sat down with Norton at SXSW this year, and one of the things we discussed was this exact scenario. At the time, he seemed to me to be interested in being part of “The Avengers” if the script and the director came together in an interesting way.

[Joss] Whedon‘s been meeting the cast, laying out his plans for the film, and so far everyone seems incredibly excited by what they’re hearing. One of the people who Whedon met with was Norton, and I’d love to know what they talked about. What I do know is that both Whedon and Norton reported their enthusiasm back to Marvel, and according to some calls I made today, it even sounds like Norton was making serious plans with his agency to keep his dates clear.

Peachy Keen! Death of the Endless to Appear in Action Comics #894

I’ve never bought an issue of Action Comics before, but that’s all set to change. October’s issue is going to have a very special guest star: Death herself.  And yes, according to The Source, Neil Gaiman approves.

Death is the second oldest of the Endless, and a major character in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, which, though neither Vertigo or DC mention it very often, is a part of the DC Universe.  Apparently, she has a date with Lex Luthor.

Just In Time for Independence Day: Captain America Is Back In Business

Captain America was brought back from the dead a little while ago, but since then he hasn’t been doing much in the Marvel universe. His protege Bucky has been wearing the suit and doing the job.

Writer Ed Brubaker is finally giving Steve Rogers something to do. You can pick up the first issue of Steve Rogers: Super Soldier this week, on Thursday.

Yes, that’s right. Remember everyone: Monday is a bank holiday, so new comics come out on Thursday.

Wonder Woman Gets New Costume, New Origin; We Get Angry, Resigned

It was revealed yesterday in the New York Times, and now we’ve gotten the official word from The Source: Wonder Woman #600 releases today, with a new costume and a new backstory.

Well, it’s a new backstory in the same sense that Star Trek was a restart.  Literally.

Marvel Appoints Jeph Loeb Vice President in Charge of Television

When Jeph Loeb appeared to no longer be taking up the writing reins on The Hulk, comics fans speculated wildly as to what he might be doing next. Perhaps the writer behind Long Halloween and Batman/Superman had even been poached back by DC.

Turns out it was actually something rather different: Loeb has been put in charge of television projects for Marvel Comics.
