Wonder Woman Gets New Costume, New Origin; We Get Angry, Resigned

It was revealed yesterday in the New York Times, and now we’ve gotten the official word from The Source: Wonder Woman #600 releases today, with a new costume and a new backstory.

Well, it’s a new backstory in the same sense that Star Trek was a restart.  Literally.

Marvel Appoints Jeph Loeb Vice President in Charge of Television

When Jeph Loeb appeared to no longer be taking up the writing reins on The Hulk, comics fans speculated wildly as to what he might be doing next. Perhaps the writer behind Long Halloween and Batman/Superman had even been poached back by DC.

Turns out it was actually something rather different: Loeb has been put in charge of television projects for Marvel Comics.

We Have Our First National Comic Store Chain in the US, and Its Name is Hastings!

Just when you thought the comic medium was dead digital, Bleeding Cool reports that Texas-based entertainment and media chain Hastings will be stocking comic books in almost 130 stores across 20 states nationwide, effectively “[increasing] the number of direct market comic book sales outlets by a very significant margin…and [making] Hastings one of the major players in the comic book industry.” We at Geekosystem seriously worry for local comic shops, but in a world where paper is becoming irrelevant, perhaps any exposure is good exposure.

Plus, we’re not talking your mini-shelf of graphic novels at Barnes & Noble or Borders here, but stands full of comics, which will reportedly include brand new comics distributed by Diamond, the world’s largest distributor of English-language comics and related merchandise. More details below.

Blue Beetle Crawling Towards Television [Pics]

DC made hints, earlier this week, about the possibility of a live-action Blue Beetle television show, in the form of a tweet from Geoff Johns. Those hints are getting a little clearer, now that Johns has revealed seven still shots of the title character through DC’s The Source blog.

Johns was clear about the ultimate meaning of the reveal:

This isn’t final. This isn’t greenlit. It’s only a test that was done. We still have a long way to go to see if we can get this off the ground and a lot of people to jump on board…

So, it’s sort of pie in the sky thinking. We wouldn’t be geeks if we weren’t into that. Johns says the full clip will be shown at San Diego Comic-Con. You can see the rest of the pics below.

Wondercon Makes Us Sad: Greg Rucka Leaving, All-Star Batman and Robin Not Over

This weekend is Wondercon and of course announcements are rolling out to let us know what to expect from the world of comics, movies, and science fiction. The two that have caught our eye are not exactly what we would call reassuring.

DC Comics has announced that Frank Miller and Jim Lee are still dedicated to the long running “deadline challenged” series of All-Star Batman and Robin, and will be starting up a new series Dark Knight: Boy Wonder, to begin running in February 2011. They promise that these issues will ship on time. Without, you know, switching to a bi-monthly schedule halfway through. And then a five month delay on the last issue which ultimately has to be recalled.

Warner Announces DC is the New Harry Potter: One DC Superhero Movie a Year

Now that the Harry Potter franchise is finally kicking the bucket (in 2011 with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II), Warner Brothers is looking for another cash cow of beloved characters to drive its infernal engine, and it didn’t have to look far.

Yesterday, at Showest, WB head Alan Horn said this:

As we ease out of Harry Potter, we hope to bring you the excitement of the DC [Comics] Library!

This would imply that DC character based movies will be released yearly, like the Harry Potter films, and, according to another Showest announcement, will be in 3-D.

Pirate Batman is Suprisingly Eerie

Ever wanted to see Batman, if he was Edward Teach?  If he was a caveman?

If he was a Pilgrim?

Pine no longer, because Andy Kubert‘s completed covers for Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne have been revealed.  Frankly, we think there’s something off about Pirate Batman.  We just can’t put our fingers on – oh, that’s right.  He’s smiling.

Grant Morrison has given himself the opportunity to indulge in historical Bat Men with a plot development that caused Batman to become lost in time.  (Most of his friends and family think that he’s dead.)  Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne is a 5 part series that will be released mid-May.  More covers after the jump:

Electrocuted Elephants, Perpetual Energy, and the GM Electrovan: The Bloom Box in Context

Thanks a lot, Edison

While the name “energy server” might conjure up a high tech device unfathomable before this century, the newly unveiled Bloom Box is actually based on a much more staid concept: the fuel cell. While in recent years fuel cells have been all the rage due to their potential usage in everything from cars to laptops, their origins actually go back almost 200 years.
