Dog Gets Caught Red-Handed [Video]

We were just too excited about the Psychonauts update yesterday evening to leave you with an uplifting end of the day video, so we thought we’d help everyone start their day with the above video of Tank, the English Mastiff who didn’t know how to dispose of incriminating evidence, but when his owner returns home, immediately realizes that maybe he should’ve tried to dispose of said evidence a tad harder, with said realization manifesting pretty clearly on the Mastiff’s face. Dogs seem to be pretty good at knowing when they’ve done wrong.

Dog Owners Forced to Forfeit Their Pets in China

Government officials in Jiangmen, China are banning residents from having dogs as pets. Set to take place at the end of August, the ban will require all current dog owners to take their pets to a drop-off center where they will either be adopted by people who live in rural areas or euthanized. The goal of the ban is to reduce the number of dogs in areas of Jiangmen that are most densely populated.

According to the city government’s official notice on “Strengthening the Management of Dogs,” any dog owner that wants to keep their pet rather than surrender it to people unknown or sudden death will be allowed to apply for a license. However, it seems as though only people who plan to use their dogs for security for a warehouse or other business will be granted licenses.

Ancient Skull Sheds Light On How Dogs Became Man’s Best Friend

A newly discovered canine skull dating back 33,000 years may be some of the earliest evidence for dog domestication ever found. The skull was unearthed in a cave in the Siberian Altai mountains by an international team of Russian-led archaeologists.

The skull shows a mixture of traits seen in dogs and wolves. The snout is similar in size to early domesticated dogs in Greenland from around 1,000 years ago, but its large teeth are closer to those found in 31,000-year-old European wolves. The study, which was published in the journal PLoS One, suggests that the newly found skull may be from a dog in the extremely early stages of domestication.

6th Annual Surf Dogs Competition Has Surfing Dogs [Video]

The sixth annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition took place this past weekend in Imperial Beach, California. Each dog had ten minutes to catch his or her best two waves, and was judged under the harshest of microscopes, being scored in categories like confidence level, length of ride and their overall ability to “grip it and rip it.” The winners, listed past the break, won their very own pet vacation at the resort. The resort doesn’t hold the competition solely to produce adorable Internet videos; the competition has become a successful fundraiser for nonprofit organizations, with this year’s event helping DonorsChoose.org, which allows public school teachers to post classroom needs and project requests for individual donors to choose from and sponsor. See? Adorable doggies make a difference in the world.

The Many Flavors of Corgis

Over the weekend, a Reddit user posted the above picture of a Husky/Corgi mix, which soon found itself disseminated to all corners of the Internet. But now there’s more to love since the Horgi (Corskey?) has inspired other Corgi hybrid owners to show off their mutts, with adorable results.

My corgis, let me show you them.

Dachshund Wearing Chainmail

In the ancient and medieval worlds, before firearms became prevalent, armies employed dogs to strike fear into the hearts of their foes. The ancient Romans had whole companies comprised of vicious dogs, which were often starved before battle and equipped with knife-covered collars and anklets. And according to The New Dog Encyclopedia, “During the Middle Ages, dogs were armored as completely as the knights and their charging horses. Suits of canine armor — plate, chain and canvas — were worn into battle and for the chase.” We’re guessing none were as cute as this guy, though.

Someone Just Play Fetch With This Dog Already! [Video]

Watching this dog try so hard to play fetch with a statue sitting on a bench is both extremely adorable and deeply depressing, especially when the dog repeatedly picks up the stick and places it on the lap of said statue. The people recording the video seriously need to stop laughing a the dog’s adorable predicament and play fetch with it.
