J.J. Abrams in Talks With Valve About Half-Life and Portal Films

In his continued attempts to control everything we love, today J.J. Abrams said he's in talks with Valve co-founder Gabe Newell about bringing Portal and Half-Life to the big screen. These talks are in the very early stages, and a lot can happen to derail the projects, but Abrams has said, "Both a Portal and Half-Life movie are things I want to see." Us too, Mr. Abrams. Us too.

Here’s an Entire Hour of Valve’s Gabe Newell on Business, Economics, and Video Games [Video]

Can Gabe Newell, of video game company Valve fame, do no wrong? The breathless way some fans speak of the company's products like Half-Life and Portal seems to indicate that they believe he can't. Even if you're not a fan of the various and sundry products that Newell's been associated with, Valve's structure as a company is fascinating: People just sort of decide on what to work on, and then they do it. Newell spoke recently in Texas at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, and they recorded the whole fascinating thing. Check it out after the jump.

Valve Boss Not Optimistic for Windows 8 “Catastrophe”

It isn't a stretch to say Gabe Newell, head of Valve Software, is no fan of Microsoft's Windows 8. His company has been focusing on bringing their proprietary platform, Steam, to Linux partly because they see only doom and gloom in the future for the PC market. With the newest update, Newell fears that the open nature of the PC will be curtailed in favor of limiting competition from those outside Microsoft.

Check Out This Half-Life 3 Gaben Poster And The Making Of

Fans have been clamouring for Half-Life 3, or at least some information on the series, for a while now. Nothing has really changed on Valve's end so, unsurprisingly, nothing has really changed on the fan-end either. In addition to playing Half-Life 2 in solidarity, fans also have a tendency to create Gabe Newell (or Gaben, as he is often called) art. It's a something of a tradition. Here is a particularly majestic piece of a crowbar-weilding Gaben by Darren Geers. Expect it to accomplish precisely nothing on the Half-Life 3 front. Still, cool though. Check out the impressive time-lapse after the jump.

Steam Platform, Valve Games Coming to Linux

After being rumored for years, Valve has revealed that they are indeed working to bring a native version of their popular game distribution platform Steam to Linux. Not only that, the game company is apparently quite keen to have their games running natively on the operating system as well, beginning with Left 4 Dead 2.

What Will Gabe Newell Announce at This Year’s E3? [Video]

If you're really hoping that head Valve honcho Gabe Newell is going to announce a third game in one of their more popular series at this year's E3, you obviously don't know that Valve can't count to three. YouTube user aekime needed to learn Flash, so aekime made this little animation as both an extremely accurate prediction of what Valve will do come this year's E3, and a way to, you know, learn Flash. Gaben approves.

Report: Is Valve Working on a “Steam Box” Gaming Console?

Late last night, The Verge posted an interesting article claiming that game developer and distributor Valve might be readying for a foray into the hardware business with a gaming console. Called a "Steam Box," the hypothetical set-top device would bring Valve's online game distribution system Steam to TVs similar to how the Roku and Boxee brought online streaming video into the living room. If true, such a device could drastically change the distinction between PC and console games.

Personal Data May Have Been Accessed During November Steam Intrusion

Steam, the online gaming distribution system we know and love, announced back in November that they'd been the victim of a security breach. At the time, it was reported that the hacker had accessed the Steam user database, but that no information appeared to have been compromised. However, the ongoing investigation seems to indicate that it might be worse than originally thought.

Portal 2 Announces Preorder Availability with Valentine’s Day Video

In a just-released promotional video, Valve makes a very convincing case that the best gift for wooing your sweetheart isn't a box of chocolates or an enormous diamond, but rather a preorder for Portal 2. Hold on: Portal 2 is available for preorder? And defying typical Valve time, that April 19th release date hasn't been cruelly delayed yet again? And Gabe Newell is looking really good lately? Verily, praise is due unto Saint Valentine for this trinity of modern-day miracles. (Portal 2 preorder page)

PS3 Portal 2 Comes With Free PC and Mac Versions and Cross-Platform Play

Back at E3, Valve honcho Gabe Newell said the PlayStation 3 was going to be the platform with the best Portal 2 experience available. A bit after that, it was revealed that the PS3 title would be receiving Steam integration. Now, continuing to back up Newell's statement, Valve has announced that if one buys the PS3 version of Portal 2, they'll receive a free voucher for the PC and Mac Steam versions of the game as well, simply by linking one's PlayStation Network account to their Steam account. If that weren't enough, all these platforms will be able to play and chat with one another, as well as store save files on the cloud, which can be accessed by any of the platforms. Valve also promised to add "more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases."

Portal 2 is currently set for an April 20 release. I apologize, but it has to be said. This is a triumph.

We Ask Prominent Geeks: Team Edward, or Team Jacob? We Get … Interesting Replies

Twilight: Eclipse: This is a movie that is in movie theaters, and some people are apparently very excited about it. Yesterday, there was quite a stir at Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan’s Senate confirmation hearing when a senator pseudo-asked her stance on the Twilight feud between Edward (the vampire) and Jacob (the werewolf). Against our [...]

    Portal 2. PS3. 2011. It’s On.

Valve chief Gabe Newell just made a surprise appearance at Sony's otherwise-pretty-blah-so-far E3 announcement and snapped the crowd to attention: He showed the first-ever official footage of Portal 2 which he announced will be coming to the PS3 after all, contrary to previous reports.

Valve Chief Gabe Newell Will Sic Ninjas and Hounds on You if You Email Him Twice

Valve co-founder and managing director Gabe Newell is known for his good humor and for his unusual transparency as the chief of a major gaming company: His email address is available to all on Valve's website, and he regularly responds to emails from customers, often wittily. Those traits were on display when he responded to one Redditor's query about what would happen if someone emailed him twice, which was made in reference to an AT&T rep's recent inexplicable threat to file a cease and desist order if one dissatisfied customer dared to email AT&T's CEO twice. Here's Gabe Newell's exchange with Redditor sockpuppets. Randall Stephenson, eat your heart out:
