George Lucas

Star Wars Yoga

Who says that a healthy spine and obsessive geekery are mutually exclusive? Writer and comedian Matthew Latkewicz sure doesn’t, which is why he’s whipped up Star Wars Yoga, a series of postures and stretches inspired by the Star Wars series. In Latkewicz’s world, LucasArts’ marketing towards “overweight ‘geeks’ and ‘nerds’” has hit saturation, and so it turns to the next logical target market: Yuppies.

Lucasfilm Calls Copyright Infringement on Wicked Lasers’ Non-Lightsaber Lightsaber

Wicked Lasers are the makers of a $199 retail laser that can burn flesh and cause blindness, and two weeks ago, Lucasfilm Ltd. sent them a letter that threatened legal action if the company did not alter the design of its Pro Arctic Laser or stop selling it altogether. According to Lucasfilm, “it is apparent from the design of the Pro Arctic Laser that it was intended to resemble the hilts of our lightsaber swords, which are protected by copyright.”

The letter doesn’t accuse Wicked Lasers of promoting the lasers as lightsabers, but instead cites media coverage that frequently drew parallels between the two.

Steve Liu, CEO of Wicked Lasers, told CNN:

Most people feel it’s kind of ridiculous… We would never use any comparison like that to ‘Star Wars’ or a lightsaber or anything like that.

The People vs. George Lucas Debuts at SXSW

This past Saturday, The People vs. George Lucas debuted at South by Southwest Film, ladling out a healthy dose of righteous Star Wars nerdrage upon one of the farthest-fallen figures in the geek pantheon.

The documentary, directed by Alexandre O. Philippe, has as its focal point the franchise-slaughter Lucas committed when he rolled out The Phantom Menace in 1999, smothering the franchise goodwill of thousands of fans with visions of Jar-Jar Binks.

We haven’t seen the whole thing, but based on the trailer, The People vs. George Lucas looks like a pretty strange affair: cartoons, people in costumes, and serious-talk thrown in a blender. In their review of the movie, Heat Vision criticizes the film as “messy:” “There’s no clear hook for the film, merely an idea that’s instantly grokked by geeks and usually ignored by others.” They also recommend the excellent, jaw-dropping 70-minute YouTube takedown of Phantom Menace.

Judge for yourself with the HD trailers after the jump:

It’s Been Three Months: Seriously, Stop Hating on Avatar Already

Last week, I Watch Stuff reported that James Cameron and Fox Studios are in talks to rerelease Avatar to theaters with some extra footage late this summer.

Now, hold it right there.  I’m going to come back to this.  But first, from the post:

Did Avatar‘s 162-minute running time leave you another to see another [sic] 10 minutes of mundane parable whitewashed with CGI?

I don’t want to specifically call out I Watch Stuff, a site that puts out good stuff; it’s one example of many.  But seriously: It’s been three months. Everyone, stop hating all over Avatar already.

Admiral Ackbar Doing Well in Early Student Voting for Ole Miss Mascot

This past weekend, we reported that a campaign was underway at Ole Miss to make Admiral Ackbar the university’s new mascot. As geeked out as we were by the possibility of the beloved, squidlike Star Wars Rebel Alliance Commander of “It’s a trap!” fame leading a different set of Rebels on the playing field, we were skeptical that students would want to oust their current plantation-owning semi-mascot, Colonel Reb.

Well, color us happily surprised: an early report from TMZ on yesterday’s voting says that Ackbar is currently the “favorite” among the student body.

When Titanic Beat Star Wars, Lucas Bought Cameron this Ad

In 1998, Titanic topped Star Wars as the #1 box office movie of all time. In congratulations, George Lucas bought this full-page ad in Variety, in which the Star Wars crew jumps out of the sinking ship and into the ocean of second place. (Here’s the fully-sized ad.)

Apparently, it is a Hollywood tradition for directors who have their #1 records smashed to take out full page ads congratulating the new record-holders. The good people of Reddit have dug up two more such ads:
