Fail Whale, Prank Parrot: World Cup Sets Record As Biggest Web Event Ever

It’s official. The 2010 World Cup is the biggest thing to ever happen to the internet, ever. According to Akamai.com’s Net Usage Index, net traffic on the first day of the World Cup surpassed the former leading event (Barack Obama‘s presidential election victory) by 30%.

Some of the inevitable consequences of this have been noticed by internet users. Twitter, for example, prone to hiccups on a good day, has been flying the Fail Whale to and fro.

The Globe & Mail reports on one strange side effect of the increase in traffic: a twitter campaign to save a rare Brazilian parrot. So rare, in fact, that does not actually exist.

Largest Dinosaur Bone Bed Ever Found, Found

Paleontologists in Alberta have found a dinosaur bone bed covering an area of nearly one and a half square miles, making it the largest such bed ever discovered. It contains the remains of thousands of Centrosaurus apertus, a species whose closest famous relative is of course the Triceratops. Previous discoveries of these animals provided the first evidence that some dinosaurs lived in herds.

Now, based on the new bone bed, paleontologists are drawing new conclusions. First, that some ceratopsian herds may have been much larger that originally thought, with individuals numbering in the “high hundreds to low thousands.”

I’ll give you a moment to visualize a group of these 18-20 foot long animals of that size.

The other conclusion is that these sorts of bone beds were not created when centrosauri drowned while fording a river, but by a massive, deadly storm; ruining any hopes of a dinosaur themed Oregon Trail.

Ad Fail: Unfortunate Luge Ad In Globe And Mail Just Four Days After Luger’s Death

Oy. Suffice it to say this is only one of those things that can only happen in print. Canada’s national newspaper the Globe and Mail reportedly ran this unfortunate ad just four days after Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed in a practice run accident.
