114,000 iPad Users Exposed to Massive Security Breach

Valleywag’s Ryan Tate breaks the news of a massive security breach that would render at least 114,000 iPad 3G subscribers vulnerable to hacking and spam, among them New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer, and apparently even Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff.

While this particular breach is fortunately not going to impact anyone’s security in a meaningful way — it was carried out by a white hat group charmingly called “Goatse Security,” who promptly notified AT&T after they exposed the vulnerability, causing AT&T to close the security hole — it highlights the sloppiness with which AT&T has been handling iPad customers’ data, and serves as a cautionary tale that “Apple” and “security” are not as inextricably linked as many MacHeads think.

iPad 3G U.S. Release Date Confirmed as April 30th: Apple

Given the iPad‘s surprise success, the U.S. release date of the iPad 3G has been the subject of some confusion: Yesterday, when Apple posted an update to its store to the effect that the 3G would be available “by May 7th,” some analysts took it to mean that Apple had experienced a “production bottleneck” due to demand, and that the U.S. release of the tablets were effectively being pushed back from its previous late April target, just as the European release of the iPad has been delayed.

Well, Apple has just cleared things up, and its initial target still holds: The iPad 3G with Wi-Fi will be delivered to preorder customers on April 30th, and will be available in stores at 5:00pm on April 30th.

You Can Preorder an iPad Now, If You Want To

iPad preorders just went live at Apple’s online store at 8:30am EST (5:30am PST).

Both the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi+3G models are available for preorder; we know that the release date for Wi-Fi iPads is April 3rd, but the release date for 3G iPads has not yet been confirmed beyond “late April.”
