A Kinect hack that involves Minecraft? Even if it wasn’t any good, we’d be contractually obliged to put it on this here website. Fortunately, it is! Nathan Viniconis has come up with a nifty hack to transform snapshots from the Kinect camera into Minecraft save files, with a pretty strong correspondence between real-world colors and block colors. Above: An enormous statue of Nathan Viniconis playing the guitar.
Just wait until Notch introduces paint …

Further cementing early 2011 as the year of the DIY superhero proving that the awesomest uses of the Kinect thus far come not from the existing library of games, but from the hacks: A fan of the Japanese superhero Ultra Seven concocted a Kinect hack that imposes the hero’s red-and-silver frame on his body. And when he strikes the right poses, beam weapons shoot out of his arm, lasers shoot out of his forehead, and his helmet turns into a charged projectile.

Remember Oliver Kreylos, the US Davis researcher who wowed us with his 3D video reconstruction using the Kinect‘s dual camera? Well, he’s back, and this time, he’s got two Kinects worked in tandem for even better 3D, though some interference is created.
First test of merging the 3D video streams from two Kinect cameras into a single 3D reconstruction. The cameras were placed at an angle of about 90 degrees, aimed at the same spot in 3D space.
The two cameras were calibrated internally using the method described in the previous video, and were calibrated externally (with respect to each other) using a flat checkerboard calibration pattern and manual measurements.
