Lightsaber

The Force is Strong With JediBot [Video]

Students at Stanford University have finally made it possible to have a lightsaber fight with a robot. Be still my heart. In the video, the students who worked on the project explain why they decided to build a sword-fighting robot (spoilers: because they could, that’s why), and why there’s is unique. You may have seen robots fencing with each other, but this robot tracks and responds to the human fighter’s movement, making it a truly interactive experience.

And those colorful “lightsabers” aren’t just for show, either. The robot tracks the position of the green sword, so if you turn to the Dark Side and take up the red saber, the bot will be blind to you.

“Your Powers Grow Weak, Old Man.” [Video]

Yesterday, you would have just seen how old people settle their differences in rural France. But today you can see how old French Jedis settle their differences.

My favorite part? The surprise second act when the old man makes a feigned retreat to his tractor, only to return to the fray.

E3: Second Trailer for The Old Republic Drops … This Team Needs to Make All Video Game Trailers!

Holy moly, it’s the fourth time I’ve seen this trailer and I’m still wetting my pants. With E3 2010 in full swing, the Star Wars franchise continues to astound geeks worldwide with their incredible game cinematic teasers, first for The Force Unleashed II and now for Bioware‘s much anticipated MMORPG The Old Republic.

In what is essentially a five-minute short film, we watch a raucous battle between Republic and Sith forces on the once-beautiful planet of Alderaan unfold. Big friggin’ guns are fired, and of course, lightsabers are swung. It’s time to see the “good guys” strike back for a change (for the ignorant and forgetful ones, the first incredible trailer detailed the absolute destruction of the Jedi Temple at the hands of Sith sabers and bounty hunter wrist-launchers).

Everything Wrong with the LOST Finale is Fixed, with Lightsabers [Video]

Warning: There will be spoilers for the LOST finale. I figure, though, that at this point either you’ve seen it, or have resigned yourself to the fact that you won’t be able to ever surf the internet again unless you accept that you will have the ending ruined for you.
I’ll admit, I was that one rocking in the corner after the LOST finale, cradling myself and sobbing uncontrollably. But for a good chunk of the viewing audience, the series’ conclusion was complete rubbish, leaving them with few answers to many, many questions. Another point of contention: The fight between Locke and Jack, though COMPLETELY AWESOME, was cut short by Kate.

Nathan Fillion and Jimmy Kimmel Talk Lightsabers, the Impossibility of Coolness

Earlier this week, Nathan Fillion — a.k.a. Richard Castle, a.k.a. Captain Mal — appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote his show Castle, the season finale for which is airing on May 17th, and which made plenty of Fillion fans happy when it was recently renewed for a third season on ABC.

As with all good talk show interviews, the ‘promotion’ part was but a dim light in the background: Mostly, the interview consisted of Nathan Fillion telling geeky anecdotes. When Jimmy Kimmel chided Fillion for being possibly the only adult male who mail-ordered an extremely realistic toy lightsaber online (yes, there is a story behind this) who actually knows and interacts with women, Fillion — who is a known cool person — replied with his thoughts on the impossibility of attaining coolness:

Lightsaber Dueling Coming to iPhone Next Month

Because iPhones weren’t geeky enough already: “Star Wars: Lightsaber Duel” is coming to the iPhone next month, courtesy of THQ Wireless. According to Mashable, “Lightsaber Duel” builds on an older iPhone app, “Lightsaber Unleashed,” which used the accelerometer in the iPhone to create whooshing, officially sanctioned lightsaber sounds.

The key difference here is actual dueling: if an iPhone-owning friend of yours also has the app, you’ll be able to use Bluetooth to duel with one another.
