What’s the Shelf Life on Older Memes These Days? [Video]

Remember when a meme could comfortably live on just under the public awareness for years? Sure, part of that was because no one wanted to go on 4Chan to learn about all of them, but memes still have a very comparatively short shelf life now. Mike Rugnetta of PBS Idea Channel (who used to work for Know Your Meme) wants to talk about it with you.

We've been having this discussion in the office for a while now, and since this beloved meme is getting more and more press coverage with the creation and subsequent hacking of the dogecoin, it's only becoming more and more of an issue. How exactly do you say "doge?"

Such Meme, Very List: 13 Best Doge Memes of 2013

Clearly this year was the year of the doge -- even though none of us here at the office can even agree how to pronounce "doge" in the first place. We thought we'd round up some of our favorites to celebrate, at least before we all get sick of these dumb pictures of shiba inu dogs and they go the way of all other memes before them.

Man, Bitcoins are so old and busted. What's the going rate now, like, $900 USD to 1 Bitcoin? Laaaame. The new hotness is Dogecoin, the latest in cryptocurrency. Or, as the doges call it, "such currency." Very coin. Wow.

Science May Have Just Discovered Why Haters Gonna Hate

Why are some people just inclined to hate on things? To pick the dumbest, most negative facets of a situation and focus on them exclusively, ignoring anything good that might be there in favor of just ragging on things? According to a new study published this week, we may just be born that way, having a "negative dispositional attitude" from birth.

Hey Girl: Before Gosling, There Was Edison [Sponsored]

Yes, we’re already past peak Hey Girl saturation, but perhaps that’s why we enjoy GE’s Thomas Edison-inspired variation on it. It’s reminiscent of everything we loved about the original with a smart twist courtesy of one of history's most notable engineers and inventors. Edison’s no Ryan Gosling, of course, but hey, who among us is?

Imgur Launches Meme Generator to Fill Quickmeme Reddit Void

After Quickmeme was banned across the entire site for manipulating upvotes, Reddit users have been looking for a new place to get their fix of Impact font on cat pictures. Luckily, your very favorite image hosting service, Imgur, has stepped up to the plate and released their own meme generator today, pre-programmed with all the classics you know and love. I'm using the word "classics" here loosely, of course. In Internet time that means they've been around at least a week.

Reddit Bans Quickmeme After Investigation by r/AdviceAnimals Moderators

I don't spend a whole lot of time on Reddit, but even I know that Quickmeme and Reddit seem to go hand in hand pretty recently -- or at least, they used to, because now Quickmeme has been banned across the entire site for using bots to manipulate the upvote/downvote system so that their hosted memes come out on top. In short, you can't fool Reddit forever.

Animal Crossing Villager Now a Psycho Meme Out for Blood and Fruit

Thanks to E3, we saw our first look at the upcoming Super Smash Bros. games for Wii U and 3DS. Three newcomers to the roster of Nintendo's all-star fighting franchise were revealed: Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer, and Animal Crossing's Villager. At first, gamers seemed to be extremely hyped over the inclusion of Mega, but then something strange happened. Seemingly overnight, the Internet noticed just how creepy the Villager could be. Vadering’s a Prime Example of an Internet Sin

At the risk of sounding like Old Man Internet telling all the new folks to get off his lawn, we all should really just agree that Vadering is not actually an Internet meme. At best it's a sad attempt to seed the beginnings of one, and at worst it's the scummiest kind of viral marketing. Either way, there's definitely nothing good going on.

The 7 Best Harlem Shake Videos the Internet’s Produced So Far

The Harlem Shake phenomenon is still ongoing. We're only about a week into this thing, and there have already been a number of hilarious takes on the concept. The general idea is to take the first thirty seconds of "Harlem Shake" by Baauer, have one person dancing oddly while everyone else is acting normal, and then cut to the whole room exploding into motion at the first mention of "do the Harlem shake" ends. The end of the video must be a slower speed than the rest. Hit the jump to check out the seven best Harlem Shake videos the Internet's produced so far.
