Hey guys, remember Ping? The social network Apple baked right into iTunes and debuted in 2010? Well, now it seems that Apple has grown weary of investing its energies into something that has failed to resonate with the general public. Word on the street is that Ping's days are numbered.

Google turned quite a few heads with the release of its streaming music locker service some months back, which allowed users to store up to 20,000 songs regardless of size on the search giant's servers. From there, the music could be streamed to any device for free via a data connection. Last night, Google added another piece to their growing foray into the musical world with the announcement of a music download store as part of the Android Marketplace.

A day after Ping, Apple's music-only social network, launched, it's already plagued with things unrelated to music, namely spam.

Though Ping has a fairly easy feature to report offensive content, Apple seemed to forget that this is the Internet. Like I mentioned, there really didn't seem to be a way to enforce the music-only barrier of Ping, which has already been breached by run-of-the-mill internet spammers who got the ball rolling with the infamous "free iPhone" spam.

Somewhat curiously placed under the Store category in iTunes 10, rather than having a category of its own, lies Ping, Apple's own hat thrown into the social network ring. Dubbed a "social network for music," Ping aims to take standard social networking features and combine them with iTunes purchases and a music-centric theme.
