U.S. Government Continues to Target Piracy in All Forms, Seizes 1,400 Halloween Costumes From China

Assuming the image used by Today Health is accurate, it looks like 1,400 little girls won't be going out on Halloween as somewhat creepy pirates. U.S. Customs and Border Protection diverted the shipment of costumes to a warehouse for testing as they reached Seattle in September, but only just confirmed their suspicions: They are full of lead. There's a certain level of lead that's considered acceptable, but these Chinese costumes tested at 11 times the legal limit.

Torrenting Turtle Knows the Truth About Software Pirates

Anyone who has ever pirated anything has surely seen a message in the included info file that makes seemingly noble claims about the pirated copy being for demo purposes only, or how the piracy group strongly encourages people to buy the product if they enjoy it. Well, everyone knows not all software pirates are that noble, whether or not they claim to be. This tidbit of knowledge is so common, in fact, that even a turtle knows the truth.

Next Season, the Japanese Power Rangers Will Be Pirates

This image is the first released shot of the main characters of Japan's next season of Super Sentai, or, as we know it in America, Power Rangers. Your eyes do not deceive you. Those are an assortment of "futuristic" cutlasses and flintlock pistols, and a background of nautical maps. It gets better.

Shakespeare Sort of Sounded Like A Pirate

One of the best classes I ever took in college was The History and Structure of the English Language, where one of the many, many fascinating things our lexiconnoisseur professor revealed to us like an endless buffet of the best intellectual candy was that the English accent in the time of Shakespeare is closest to what we would now, in America, identify with International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Thankfully, some theater productions do occasionally experiment with presenting the Bard's work with the sounds of contemporary speech. This video from the University of Kansas is of a production advised in it's Original Pronuciation efforts by professor Paul Meier. Probably the most exciting thing about this to me is that now all those awkward couplets actually rhyme again. (via Kottke.)

It’s International Talk Like A Pirate Day!

Say what you want about ninjas: they don't have their own day. Probably because that would be too obvious. I mean, what's the point of having a day where you expect ninjas? But pirates, now. There's a sort of ego thing going on there, I guess. Anyway, looking for something to get you in the holiday spirit? Look no further.

Oops: Chinese Theme Park Uses Porn Poster to Advertise Pirates of the Caribbean Ride

On a trip to an amusement park in Xiamen, China, Redditor coltrane087 noticed something unusual about a Pirates of the Caribbean ride: In the midst of standard fare promotional posters for the film, someone had slipped in a poster from Pirates, which is not, in fact, an installment in the beloved Johnny Depp-helmed series, but is rather a pornographic film that, among other accolades, won the 2005 AVN Award for "Best All-Girl Sex Scene - Video."

Don't see it? Zoom in on that bottom right corner:
