Pokémon is Sort of, Not Really, Coming to iPhone

I’ve got good news and a lot of bad news for you. The good news is that a fully licensed Pokémon game called Pokémon Say Tap? will be coming to both iOS and Android devices this summer. That’s all for good news, and it’s all downhill from here.

The bad news is that Nintendo, who own about a third of the Pokémon franchise, maintain that they have no plans on ever bringing a full-fledged Pokémon game to a third-party mobile device. Or any game, for that matter. The worst news is that it’s not even a full-fledged Pokémon game. Yes, there are monsters which are pocket-sized involved, but the forthcoming game is based around card and rhythm-matching mechanics. Perhaps its best that this game isn’t likely to see release out side of Japan.

Interestingly, Nintendo’s continued abhorrence of mobile gaming comes despite a 5% stock bump at the news of a mobile Pokémon game. If money won’t shift Nintendo, then nothing will.

Pokémon and Fashion

Remember the fashion show sidequest from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl? Pokémon&Fashion brings it to life, adding Pokémon into fashion shots. One can only assume the Pokémon were fed well-made Poffins in order to keep their coats shiny and smooth for the photo shoots.

Pokémon Level Up in Realism, Creepiness

If you thought the idea of Pokémon was always a little weird, well, it just got a little weirder. Remember how the ghost Pokémon would always scare the characters out of their wits despite being sort of cute? Well, just imagine if it had been these bad boys instead and it makes a little more sense. Stephen Lefcourt took it upon himself to make some Photoshop images of what several Pokémon might look like in real life and though he’s only done a handful so far, who knows what others may pop up on his flickr down the line. Check out the rest of these curiosities after the jump and be careful in that tall grass.

Guy Dressed as Pikachu Has Identity Crisis Amidst Frenetic Musical [Video]

From Random Encounters, this video is totally insane and never lets up. We at Geekosystem felt it was of utmost importance that this frenetic Pikachu musical be the last thing that enters your eyeballs and earholes today.

Super Minimalist Pokémon Art

Your favorite Pokémon, but reduced to blocks of color in a set of minimalist fanart from Natalie Al-Tahhan she calls “Essence of Pokémon.” Though I confess that I don’t recognize all the silhouettes (“who’s that Pokémon?”), Al-Tahhan’s work celebrates the design of these now iconic characters.

Study Finds Pokéwalker More Accurate Than Other Pedometers

Nintendo’s weird peripheral from the HeartGold and SoulSilver Pokémon generation, the Pokéwalker, is an interesting mix of pedometer and portable digital pet. As it turns out, the pedometer half of the peripheral is better at being a pedometer than regular pedometers, according to researchers at Iowa State University.

At a recent experimental biology conference, Iowa State professor Lorraine Lanningham-Foster presented the findings from ongoing research regarding how the Pokéwalker encourages children to partake in physical activity. The study tested various pedometers counting steps on a treadmill running at four different speeds, and the Pokéwalker ended up being the most accurate at counting the steps. Kotaku points out that the research isn’t being funded by Nintendo, but by Iowa State’s Nutrition and Wellness Research Center.

Surveys Peg Which Pokémon are the Least Popular Across All Five Generations

With Pokémon Black and White releasing in early March, the Pokéworld has entered its fifth generation of Pokémon, unleashing almost 650 Pokémon into the digital wild. A series of five surveys–as Kotaku points out, with large sample sizes, one of which with over one million participants–have determined which Pokémon are the least-remembered from each generation. Each survey simply calls on participants to name Pokémon off the top of their head, records the percentage at which each Pokémon is named, then compiles the results into a handy chart that allows us to both simultaneously feel badly that not many people remembered Exeggutor, but also wonder why not many people remembered one of the most ridiculous-looking and ridiculously named Pokémon of all time. Head on past the jump to see the full breakdown.
