96-Inch Tall Cardboard and Duct Tape R2-D2

Whether or not this is the droid you’re looking for, you’re bound not to miss it. Len Komanac made this possible by building a 96-inch R2-D2 model out of cardboard and duct tape. Using four refrigerator boxes, five air conditioner boxes, three dryer boxes, three rolls of blue duct tape, one roll of aluminum tape, one can of white paint, two Sharpie pens and 52 glue sticks, Komanac created this monstrous do-it-yourself R2-D2. The cardboard robot will be displayed at the “Dr. StrangeLen or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Make the Art” exhibit in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada between July 16 and September 22. Head on past the jump to see some more pictures of the card-droid (deal with it).

Raw Footage of Bill Murray Ranting About Technology [Video]

BoingBoing has unearthed a 1982 video featuring raw footage of Bill Murray, complaining (comedically) about dumb technological advancements of the early 1980s like digital watches (“People have hands, I think watches should have hands”), talking dashboards in cars (“I would put my foot right through that dashboard”), and robots (“R2-D2…he was funny, he was cute, he’s a fine, fine actor”).

R2-D2 Headphones

Headphone company Coloud is selling some splendid-looking R2-D2-inspired headphones for $50. Skinned on their premium C34 model, they contain a microphone and in-line remote, making these possibly the geekiest gaming headphones since gaming or headphones were conceived. Alas, they’re currently sold out, though other, less awesome Star Wars-inspired headphones (Stormtrooper, Boba Fett; the Rebel Alliance headphones are pretty nice though) are still in stock. They definitely need to make a Princess Leia model.

Is This the R2-D2 DROID 2 You’ve Been Looking For?

Earlier this week, Verizon confirmed that the Motorola DROID 2 would be hitting stores today, but that a special R2-D2 edition of the phone would be available come September. Courtesy of Pocket-Lint, this is our first glimpse at what that phone will look like. We’re pretty sure it’s legit because it looks just like the background image on the newly unveiled preorder site.

Anyway: This looks pretty cool; great placement of the camera lens. The R2-D2 DROID 2 will be an online-only offer, available for a limited time in September; hit the preorder site for more details.

Carleton College Turns Observatory into Giant R2-D2

This is most commendable: Students at Minnesota’s Carleton College transformed their school’s Goodsell Observatory into a giant R2-D2, complete with bleeping and blooping. And the school seems to approve, posting some great pics on their Facebook page.

Carleton’s Goodsell Observatory gets turned into R2-D2 by an unknown group of enterprising students — complete with sound effects. All the “decorations” appear to have been draped or taped onto the dome; there was no defacing with spray paint, etc.

More pics after the jump:
