Disney Is Actually Developing Three Marvel-based TV Shows

Last month fans jumped at the news that Disney and Marvel would be bringing two Marvel properties to the small screen, and one of them would be an Incredible Hulk show. There was, however, no official announcement from ABC television regarding Marvel’s statements. Well, now we’ve got it from an even higher source, Robert Iger, the CEO of the Walt Disney Company.

We’re developing three live-action series for ABC and ABC Family.

There’s no confirmation yet on which Marvel properties will be chosen for the TV treatment, but there are some indication of which ones are most likely.

Marvel and ABC Are Developing “The Hulk” for TV

What superhero had a beloved but campy television show in the 70′s, and then kinda fell off the non-comics radar until now, when a new show was announced to be in development?

Well, Wonder Woman.

And now the Hulk!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Hulk is a priority at Marvel‘s television division, which has been running along quietly since Jeph Loeb took charge.

Wonder Woman Getting a TV Show: Gee. Thanks.

Both Deadline Hollywood and The Hollywood Reporter have some blockbuster geek news today: instead of making the long pre-production purgatory dwelling Wonder Woman movie, DC Entertainment is optioning a television show featuring the Amazonian princess, with David E. Kelley to write and produce.

Aside from the sense of “Oh, good, somebody is going to do something with Wonder Woman,” this tingles every last geek girl sense in my body.

Nerdrage commencing in t-minus… now.

Blue Beetle Crawling Towards Television [Pics]

DC made hints, earlier this week, about the possibility of a live-action Blue Beetle television show, in the form of a tweet from Geoff Johns. Those hints are getting a little clearer, now that Johns has revealed seven still shots of the title character through DC’s The Source blog.

Johns was clear about the ultimate meaning of the reveal:

This isn’t final. This isn’t greenlit. It’s only a test that was done. We still have a long way to go to see if we can get this off the ground and a lot of people to jump on board…

So, it’s sort of pie in the sky thinking. We wouldn’t be geeks if we weren’t into that. Johns says the full clip will be shown at San Diego Comic-Con. You can see the rest of the pics below.

Everything Wrong with the LOST Finale is Fixed, with Lightsabers [Video]

Warning: There will be spoilers for the LOST finale. I figure, though, that at this point either you’ve seen it, or have resigned yourself to the fact that you won’t be able to ever surf the internet again unless you accept that you will have the ending ruined for you.
I’ll admit, I was that one rocking in the corner after the LOST finale, cradling myself and sobbing uncontrollably. But for a good chunk of the viewing audience, the series’ conclusion was complete rubbish, leaving them with few answers to many, many questions. Another point of contention: The fight between Locke and Jack, though COMPLETELY AWESOME, was cut short by Kate.

Rumor: Lady Gaga on Dr. Who?

This is highly speculative, but it’s just to weird not to mention.

Lady Gaga might be in an episode of Dr. Who. According to Gareth Roberts, scriptwriter for the show,

She is no stranger to dressing up and would be more than a match for the Doctor. It would be a great coup to get her.

Netflix Says: No Games; Why They Should Reconsider

Yesterday, The Consumerist talked with the Vice President of Netflix Corporate Communications, Steve Swasey, and asked him if Netflix would ever consider offering video games by mail, as its biggest rival Blockbuster seems to be considering. Swasey answered in the negative:

Video games are a different economic model than movies and TV episodes, on which Netflix concentrates to provide the greatest convenience, selection and value to consumers… Movies are perennial. A great movie from 1972 is still a great movie but who wants to play Madden ’95?

So… you’re backing up your claim that video games are not perennial by bringing up a franchise that is released yearly? Of course the Madden games aren’t perennial! I don’t imagine many people have Dr. Jekyll y el Hombre Lobo (1972) in their queues, and I’m sure Netflix has a correspondingly low number of discs in stock. We’re not asking you to keep a billion copies of Madden ’95, just maybe some of Warcraft III, or Smash Bros Brawl, or Ico.

Setting aside the poor argument Swasey presents, here’s why Netflix should seriously consider getting into video game rental: It is estimated that Netflix will gain 2 million new subscribers from consoles alone in the next year. That’s half of their projected subscriber growth for 2010.

Sims Creator to Give Us Television Show, See What We Do With It

IGN has uncovered Will Wright‘s next project, and it’s not a game. The king of procedurally generated content and creator of Spore and the Sim games (including Sim City, Sim Ant, and The Sims) is instead working with the former president of Nickelodeon and Spike TV to create a television series.

Well, “create” implies a certain level of completion. Wright prefers to give his audience the tools to create their own fun rather than creating a single experience. Or, in the words of Penny Arcade, this.

Let’s Get Dangerous: Darkwing Duck is Back

Nostalgia warning: Darkwing Duck is back this June. BOOM! Studios, who already publish numerous Disney character comics through their BOOM Kids! imprint, are bringing the terror that flaps in the night back in a four-issue miniseries beginning in June. The announcement was made yesterday at the Emerald City Comic Con.

Ian Brill, writer on the miniseries, promises lots of villains:

“Darkwing has such a great rogue’s gallery, I couldn’t pick just one. By the time you get to the end of the first issue you’ll see four, and then there are only going to be more as the series progresses. All the villains’ lives have been changed, too. There have been big changes in St. Canard and everyone’s dealing with them in their own way. This series has the familiar characters you want but given new situations that we hope gives a sense of vitality to the stories.”
