Scientists Create Terminator Vision for Rabbits with HUD Contact Lens

A U.S.-Finnish team has announced that they have successfully completed trials of a remotely operated heads-up display fitted against the eye in the form of a contact lens. Though the test used a rabbit and the lense contained only one pixel, it’s a bold step forward that may someday realize the dream of being able to see like a Terminator. And really, what else could we hope for?

Terminator Statue is Full of Other Movie References

The above picture is the chest of an Arnold Schwarzenegger Terminator statue that is on display at the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Orlando Odditorium. Created by Enrique Ramos, the life-sized statue is covered in references to Hollywood, including The Simpsons, Harry Potter, Rocky, Jaws, and The Wizard of Oz, among others. The statue took about five months to make using various materials (clay, resin, paper, plastic, etc.), and Ramos plans to make a motorcycle in the same style to complete the piece. Head on past the break to check out more pictures of the popculture Arnold.

Terminator Dog Needs a Home

This is Hachi, the sweet Akita/Chow mix from El Segundo, CA, and he’s lucky to be alive. Hachi survived a house fire and was in bad shape when he was brought to an animal shelter. Hachi’s Petfinder profile gives some idea of how dire his situation was:

[...] third-degree burns covering over 60 to 70 percent of his body. He was nothing but a sweetheart from the time he was carried in – black and charred with the pads of his feet literally falling off.

Thanks to some dedicated vets, Hachi recovered quickly and is now happy and healthy. He will be scared forever, though: fur will likely never grow back on the patches over his back and face, much of his left ear is missing. His appearance may prove to his benefit, as online commenters have been quick to point out the similarities between Hachi and The Terminator. Hopefully all this attention will get Hachi into a good home.

Recently, blogs have been doing a great job of promoting the stories of animals in need and adorable but very disfigured pets. Maybe a California resident can give this distinctive pup a good home? Perhaps a certain elected official with a connection to a certain film franchise that the dog vaguely resembles?

Cyberdyne Actually Exists on Real Life Earth and Builds Robots

Um, good news … ?: Japan-based research and development company Cyberdyne, which sounds familiar because it’s not supposed to be real, has developed exoskeleton technology for humans that is controlled by human thoughts. The up-side: It allows people with little to no function in their legs to walk, using sensors that detect muscular stimulation when the brain thinks of it. The weird-side: What is a company called Cyberdyne doing creating though-controlled human exoskeletons?

Terminator Bust Made of Legos

Why, good morning. I’ll bet you were wondering what a Terminator made of Legos would look like. Wonder no more. Though I’m wondering what it would look like when it shattered then reformed. Probably slower than in the movie.

Inappropriate Golden Books

Twisting beloved children’s classics to strange and nefarious ends is a time-honored tradition. See: 3/4 of the jokes on Robot Chicken. But when the one doing the twisting is a Pixar story artist who’s worked on the likes of The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and Up — he directed Up feature short George & AJ — you know you’re in good hands.

Inappropriate Golden Books are the brainchild of Josh Cooley, the aforementioned Pixar important guy. As their name suggests, they merge the big drawings and haloed pages of Little Golden Books with scenes from very much R-rated movies, like Terminator, The Godfather, and Goodfellas.

Giant Asteroids Could Reassemble Hours After Being Nuked: Sorry, Armageddon

Today in frightening science news: researchers at UC Santa Cruz and Los Alamos National Laboratory have determined that if a giant asteroid is headed towards Earth, even detonating a small nuclear bomb may not be enough to stop it. The reason? If the blast isn’t powerful enough, the asteroid fragments’ own gravity could pull all of the pieces back together, T-1000-style — in mere hours.
