Make Your Own Tumblr Error Page

Microblogging site Tumblr was down for almost an entire day earlier this week, seriously freaking out the millions of users who have come to rely upon it as their primary online presence for personal or business purposes. Hopefully, for the sake of Tumblr’s users and credibility, this is the last time it experiences such a serious outage; either way, it’s inspired a site called TumblrError.com, where you can create your own customized Tumblr error page.

Geekosystem Chats With Your Video Game Bartenders, The Drunken Moogle

Games and alcohol are two of humankind’s oldest pastimes. When homo sapiens first emerged from the simian gene pool over 250 thousand years ago, we’d toss our spears around every so often, drunk on some derivative of fermented yeast. Today, the essentials remain the same. But there’s more than the occasional game of wasted dodgeball; now we’ve found ourselves also in a digital age of gaming. And in such a video game age, 21 year-old college students Mitch Hutts and Travis Broyles of The Drunken Moogle have arrived to curate the world of alcohol.

Their website, which regularly collects and invents alcoholic drink recipes based on video games, has been popularly received on Tumblr and beyond, recently serving such gems as the Starcraft II-themed “Zerg Rush” (six shots of Fernet Blanca, Hot n’ Sweet, Baileys Irish Cream, and Tabasco sauce in succession, because who attacks with just one Zergling?) and “The Kirby” (cherry jello shot with Malibu, pink lemonade, Bacardi, and blackberry brandy). Geekosystem had the opportunity to chat with Mitch and Travis about the origin of their idea, drunk gaming, and their favorite concoctions.

Tumblr Completes The Holy Trinity of Social Media [Essay]

There is a corner of the Internet where actorscomediansmusiciansartistswritersbloggersdirectors, people from all walks of life are creating over 2 million posts per day, and are often meeting each other in person in over 50 different places around the world, from New York to London to Berlin to Tokyo. The place is Tumblr and it is quickly becoming the third member of the holy trinity of social media, along with Twitter and Facebook. Today, the New York Times makes it official with this headline: “Facebook and Twitter’s New Rival.”

Here’s the gist of Tumblr: a dead-simple way to get out your ideas or inspirations, what you’re doing, what you like or hate, whatever snip of culture or sub-culture is engaging you at the moment, across any form of media – photo, text, quip, video, audio clip, chat transcript. The sum total contributes to a unique online identity through sharing what you gather on the web with  your followers, usually with your own two cents (even if it’s as simple as “LOL”).

Technology Guru John Mayer Predicts: Twitter Out, Tumblr In.

According to John Mayer, Twitter is over. Well, actually, he’s over it. But it all pretty much boils down to John Mayer predicting that, as Twitter seems to have hit its “cruising altitude”, it may be time to disembark.

Let’s clarify. It’s not that Twitter has run its course, or that Twitter may cause celebrities to say things they shouldn’t and then suffer the consequences. Instead, it seems to be that, for Mayer at least, the “Twitter-bred syntax” has lost its je ne sais quoi.

Did Citibank Shut Down a Gay Social Networking Startup’s Bank Account over Underwear? (Update)

Fabulis, a gay social networking startup, discovered yesterday that Citibank has shut down its bank account over “objectionable content” on its blog, which is a Tumblr site that features a lot of pretty, fully-dressed men, some hoodies, and colorful underwear with the word “Fabulis” on them.

In an update posted today on Fabulis’ blog, Fabulis founder and CEO Jason Goldberg said that a Citibank manager “let us know that a compliance review occurred, which Citi says is a standard procedure, and the review officer determined the “content was not in compliance with Citibank’s standard policies.” They requested the account be terminated.”
