The Molydeux Game Jam Begins Tomorrow, and Peter Molyneux Himself Will be Stopping by to Recruit

Important news for all folks that love game jams, hilarious Twitter accounts, and creator of Fable and Black & White Peter Molyneux: The What Would Molydeux? game jam begins tomorrow. For the uninitiated, this particular game jam sprang forth from the absurdist tweets of a Twitter account that parodied Peter Molyneux’s often ambitious — sometimes to the point of absurdity — game ideas. At first, the game ideas were extremely ridiculous, though hilarious, but eventually, the account’s followers started thinking some of the silly ideas would make legitimately good games. Now, there’s a 48-hour game development challenge that starts tomorrow, and is taking place all over the world. Possibly best of all, Peter Molyneux himself will be attending the London section of the jam, both check it out, but also to recruit people for his new game developer startup.

Smithsonian’s Art Of Video Games Exhibit Opens Today [Video]

There may be some people out there who still insist that video games aren’t actually art, but they are becoming fewer and fewer. The Smithsonian, though not a “person” per se, disagrees and opened its Art Of Video Games exhibit today. The exhibit is not devoted to exploring art in video games, but rather exploring video games as their own artform. There’s a pretty wide variety of video games out there, but the Smithsonian seems devoted to touching on as many as possible, incorporating everything from Pac-Man to Doom II to Mario Galaxy. The exhibit will be featured from March 16 until September 30th before taking a 10-stop national tour. Sure video games are art, but now they’re high brow art. At least, so long as they’re in a museum instead of on a crappy TV in my filthy apartment.

In a Perfect World, This Adventure Time Video Game Would Exist

Artist Mike Gaboury dreamed a beautiful dream of an Adventure Time video game, and decided to share just a piece of that dream with us. Working in his spare time, and for no reward other than his love for the show, Gaboury animated the intro and start screen to an imaginary side-scrolling retro-style Adventure Time game. Though it’s just a fan project, it is a tantalizing to think of what a full-fledged AT game in this style would be like. See the video, after the break.

The Oklahoma Violent Video Game Tax is Dead

Careful readers will recall the news that Oklahoma was considering levying a 1% tax on all “violent” video games. According to the bill’s sponsor, Will Fourkiller (D, pictured left), money raised by the bill would fight childhood obesity by providing outdoor education and also fund efforts to prevent bullying. The bill was defeated in a 5-6 vote in the Oklahoma House Appropriations and Budget Subcommittee on Revenue and Taxation last week.

Oklahoma Lawmaker Proposes 1% Tax on Violent Video Games Like Rock Band

Oklahoma House Representative William Fourkiller has put forth an interesting proposition: Why don’t we add a 1% tax to all “violent video games? Well, mainly because that would be unconstitutional, but nonetheless the bill exists. Fourkiller’s reasoning behind pushing the tax is that — get this — violent video games promote violence and on top of that, obesity. In his defense, the proposal dictates that the extra 1% would go to youth obesity and anti-bullying organizations, but at the cost of further sullying the already sufficiently sullied reputation of violence-based video games that are not for kids anyway.

Controller-Mounted Hot Pocket Holder is Either the Best Thing Ever, or the Worst

As many of you may already know, eating something while playing video games is one of the hardest and most frustrating things in the history of mankind. Unless you’re playing a Metal Gear Solid game — where the cutscenes are long enough for you to eat a five course meal — you find yourself floundering between controller and foodstuff, losing lives in-game and hygenine points in real life. Now, there’s finally a solution to the problem, a controller-mounted Hot Pocket holder; it’s so convenient, you could probably use it during competitive online play.

Vox Media’s Gaming Site Coming Together, More Names Join Christ Grant and the McElroy Brothers

Not too long ago, three of Joystiq’s top editors left to found a new gaming site under the Vox Media umbrella. Following that, Kotaku’s editor-in-chief, Brian Crecente, departed his site as well. Now, along with a few other names the games journalism industry is sure to recognize, the new team has come together under Vox Media’s new gaming site (currently unnamed) throwing their hat into the games journalist ring, not only promising fresh content, but as Justin McElroy put it, offering a site that’s “as fun to play with as it is to read.” Currently, the site doesn’t exist, and they’re posting under The Verge banner until it does.
