China Builds a 15-Story Building in Six Days

This hotel was built in Changsha, China over the course of less than a week.  Now, before you make plans to never stay there ever, it was put together out of prefab pieces that had been built off site and simply needed to be put together.  It’s soundproof, insulated, and earthquake proof, although if you have changed your mind by now, you might want to wait at least a little bit.  The Yahoo! News article says nothing about interior furnishings, much less beds.

Dog Park Stays Well Lit – With Dog Poop

A Cambridge dog park not only urges its patrons to pick up after themselves, it also tells them exactly where they can stick it: a couple of 500-gallon tanks that collect the generated methane to power a nearby gas streetlamp.

Park Spark is a temporary installation in the dog park, fueled (if you’ll pardon the expression) by a grant from the Council of the Arts at MIT, and spearheaded by artist Matthew Mazzotta.

American Military Hoping Someone Will Harness the Power of Bioluminescence

The US Military might not be looking to make veteran Marines glow with an eldritch green light, but they are looking into making other things glow by borrowing tricks from fireflies and plankton.

And by “looking into” we mean funding university studies with grants. The big deal about bioluminescence is that it creates light without creating heat, making it invisible to infrared and other heat-seeking tech. Possible applications include “creating biodegradable landing zone markers that helicopters can spot even as wind from their rotors kicks up dirt,” making “‘friend vs. foe’ identification markers and security systems, and methods to track weapons and supplies on the battlefield.”

And also being totally cool.

Today in Oxymorons: Scientists Create “Dry Water”

While not exactly the kind of just-add-water water that would snowball into a perpetual flood and turn our world into a Kevin Costner movie, scientists have created “dry water.”

The dry water looks a bit like an artificial sweetener because each droplet of water is encased in a silica coating, making the grain of water (take that, sand!) about 95% liquid. Due to it’s ability to absorb gasses three times better than regular water, scientists suggest dry water could be used to clean up carbon dioxide and help curb global warming.

Volcano Erupts in Iceland After 200 Year Nap [Video]

At about 11:30 Saturday night, just as Iceland was easing into the day of the vernal equinox, a volcano erupted right next to the Eyjafjallajokull (yes, really) glacier.  Icelandic authorities evacuated hundreds of people from surrounding towns, fearing flooding from the melting glacier.  There have been no reports of injuries or property damage, and so we can say with only a little guilt that this volcano looks awesome.

The fissure is half a mile long and looks like something out of the Rite of Spring section of Fantasia.  Video after the jump:
