Student’s Essay Sneakily Rickrolls Professor

Rickrolling, generally a digital bait-and-switch, involves tricking someone into viewing or hearing the Rick Astley song, “Never Gonna Give You Up.” When redditor Mayniac182 was certain a computer class teacher didn’t actually read through students’ work, the redditor decided to hide the lyrics to “Never Gonna Give You Up” within a paper. Check out the full essay below, as well as Mayniac182′s full explanation.

Explanation:

Everyone in my computing class is certain the teacher doesn’t actually go through ANY work we hand in. So I’ve been up for the last few hours crafting this. The first paragraph started as an idea to use ridiculously complex words to confuse him (English is his second language), do that for a bit then just go Fresh Prince on him, but that got boring.

If you want to read through it all and figure out what I’ve done to it (aside from writing complete bullshit), read through it now and don’t read the next line.

Read the first word of every line that touches the left margin (so everything that isn’t indented). It’s taken eight cups of coffee, but I finally did it. Rickrolling my computing teacher in style.

EDIT: I handed it in just over an hour ago. Next lesson is on Friday, but I doubt he’ll ever give it back. If he does, it will probably just have a few ticks on it or something.

I’ll do a follow up if he finds the Rickrolling though.

haha that’s sweet… not to be a grammar nazi, but im pretty sure ‘organisation’ is mispelled-(organization)

  • wooder184

    in the first paragraph

  • bugmatic

Actually, ‘organization’ is correct… They spell it with an S in the UK, which is where this was written. Looks like history has repeated itself and the Nazi got beaten by the British.

  • Baron Von Vaderham

Seems like a lot of effort for something so inconspicuous. I doubt he would notice that even if he did read the paper. Well done though.

  • ramaramadingdong

    This. Is. Amazing.

It’s British. British English has many spelling variations American English has “corrected”.

Uhrr sorry, but… uhr.. there’s this place on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean called Great Britain. We spell things correctly here.

  • energy management

Wish I was first to attempt that trick, I’ll still probably try a submission like that haha. Who knows, an appreciative teacher might lol.

  • Myballs

    Amazing Pure amazing

  • guest

like.. like colour? is that one?

  • Guest

yes in fact colour is the correct spelling, not color, for the whole of the lazy fat slobby american race who cannot be bothered to spell words correctly if it means adding an extra letter, or are just too plain stupid for the most part to comprehend the complexities of English. wait is that english, as in from england? oh yeah it is, were’re the ones who made it shut the fu*k up stupid fu*king americans

  • Guest

You’re a moron. They are two separate DIALECTS of the same language. Flavour, Colour, try typing them in and you’ll get the auto correct, due to this being an american website. If it was a .uk then it would be Flavour or Colour, but it’s not here. If you wanna spit out your euro-trash, always hiding behind USA in wars, biast BS, then take it to a UK website, we don’t want it here.

  • Notgivingyoumyemail

difference between US and UK English…

  • Robbo

It’s organisation in Australian english. Just saying.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=546472450 Kira Milne

fyi, Canada spells it the right way (ie, with a u in them) as well. The US is all alone with its spelling fail.

  • SuperSparky

Actually, I spoke with a British man who was an English linguistics PHD. He said that actually American English is older and more correct than modern British (Queen’s) English. I asked him to explain and he said that in the 1800′s there became an infatuation by the British with French style. He said spellings of words changed to sound “fancier” or more hip. He explained the Americans had no such infatuation and the spellings of words mostly stayed the same.

So, a British man who has a Doctor’s degree in English linguistics basically said the English culture was so sad and so poor they had to borrow the culture of their former enemies to make themselves feel better. Geez, and you call American’s stupid.

  • guest

actually technically the french crafted modern british english making you a french speaking bastard

  • Guest

how does that make americans smart, it just proves their too lazy and self-centered to correct their own lanaguage… their english must be perfect since they’re american and all

I just have to say that I found this entire conversation intriguing! I like how even though the student(s) (possibly more than one person working on this) created an amazing piece of work (that is completely and utterly hilarious, I had to hold in my laughter during my Functional Anatomy class), and probably worked late throughout the night, some people have the nerve to try and correct his/her “mistakes.”

Let’s do everyone in the world a favor (favour) and look something up if you “think you know something about something” and want to harass or bash them about it.

Now I found the differences between the American English and British English to be fascination, so before I decided to comment I thought I might look up some information relating to the topic! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_spelling_differences Look at that! Two different dialects. Two different spellings. No one is “wrong” in the spelling because a language is what the people make it to be.

Ignorant, ethnocentric children should not be on the internet bashing people from other countries. “My country is better than yours because our spelling of THIS word is correct!!” Oh wow, I think I just saw the internet hit a new low.

On a brighter note I think that your project was great! I hope you got an excellent grade on it!

  • http://www.facebook.com/jon.aguglia Jon Aguglia

Besides the extra u is so unnecessary, it has no effect on how the word is pronounced. Americans are just more efficient.

  • Lesdeksik

Jon, The internet hasn’t hit a new low. This is were we can talk tough, feel important and believe our opinions count. If we didn’t have it we would go back to getting beat up, demoralized by our peers and having our spouses ignore us. Of course I’m 6’2″, 220 lbs and run the 40 in 3.9.

In closing, the Brits smell, Americans are fat, nobody understands what Australians say, and the French pretend to be superior while we treat them like a little brother. You put up with and protect them, but that’s just because they’re so damn helpless.

Why generalize ALL Americans as ‘stupid’ or ‘fat’ !! For your information, all of the powerful prosperous nations such as Brittan and France and the US are full of fat people because we all have more money and stuff to get more food than we really need.

You can’t take every individual from a country and call them all stupid. That makes you another mainstream bigot who probably enjoys Justin Beiber tunes.

You’d figure 12 yrs in school and people would realize that controlling and oppressing people has caused major wars. Who cares if it’s U.K. or American english? Chinese is just a whole bunch of lines, and you don’t see people complaining about the correct way to spell “earth”. And before we get into a riot of me being racist, i’m asian, more specifically chinese.

I’m not against America in any way, in fact I have both relatives and very close friends in USA, which if I had to generalize the whole country just from them, I’d say it’s much better than where I live. :)

  • EVERYBODYBUTMEISWRONG

American spelling is just as correct as British, kids. Two separate dictionaries, two separate dialects. British English is practically another language, as it has been embellished SO MANY TIMES. Moonspeak.

  • Guest

I agree with the other guy. Us Australian’s are not hiding behind any wars and we still spell things correctly. Colour needs the u… it isn’t really whole without. then again, with the evolution of “1337″, internet and texting, the English language in all its dialects is doomed to extinction, crushed under an avalanche of lols omgs and rofls….

  • guest

Please don’t be so offensive. I’m from America, and while I make a point to spell words in British English, like ‘colour’ because I think they look better that way, I admit that the variations are different dialects of English, American and British, not ‘lazy fat slobby americans’ who are ‘too plain stupid to comprehend the complexities of English’. Thank you.

Seriously? It’s a word? Who cares how he spelled it?!?! The main point of the piece was to be funny and get a good laugh.

Maybe we should have left our “lazy fat slobby American” asses at home in the 40′s and let England learn to speak German.

To deny the development and progression of written and spoken word is a very sad thing indeed. Look where we’ve come since Shakespeare!!!!. If the future is “omg, lol and m8″ then let it be. We think we feel liberated, yet cling so tightly to the things we think we know. We shall soon be the bigoted grandparents stuck in our ways, with whippersnappers running round speaking all fruity! Why can’t we just realise that we’re all just wasting time till we die anyway, and help one another out as brothers of the world.! There is no external form of judgement. Just A collection of alternate perceptions, entitled: Society! I dont Want to oppress. I want to feel reassured by my fellow man. Time will elapse, and we do slip further to the grave. Make your moments Count. 0

  • haha no. no email4you.

and you could be speaking Vietnamese whats your point. there are all these “what ifs” and in case you forgot the US got their asses handed to them on a silver platter in Vietnam.don’t start talking all sorts of shit how one nation is better than another. that is how you start a world war.

Late again as usual. WW2 started in the 30′s not the 40′s and personally I wish USA had stayed out since it is America’s party trick when fighting a war to kill more of their allies than the enemy. You even have a euphemism for it – “Blue on Blue”

Technically, as English is your mother tongue you, meaning Americans, have misspelt (another English classic) it. Not us.

  • Kady Branch

Also, England don’t fight behind America. We do not go blindly into all the wars you do, we use something called ‘calculated risk’, something your military has clearly never heard of.

  • JosseHamikron

oh dear. you DO know that American English and British English have two different ways of spelling words right?

  • Nohamyemaiallllley

HELL YEAH STUART!!! AMERICA FUCK YEAH!!!

  • Jsboyanich123

Most of your buddies from the UK called us Americans also. Now that being said, I think anyone who actually fought over something so meaningless and unimportant as the correct spelling of two words should check themselves. The USA has produced many people who have left a great impression upon the world. The same can be said for the UK. Most of your opinions are just a reflection of egocentrism. To judge millions of people based on something so lightweight as the correct spelling of ‘organization’ (US dialect) is not valid. Why can’t you judge us for the things we do right rather than the things we do wrong? The problem with the world is that most people pick out the negative things and judge upon that. All in all, both countries are filled with great people, and not so great people. Instead of fighting about a couple of words, how about we all just get off the computer and not give a fuck. (Yes, I cussed. Am I unintelligent?)

  • Jsboyanich123

I’ve always wanted to visit the UK, by the way.

You are a self-centered bigot. Now, please notice that I said “you” and not “the entire population of great Britain”. Your generalization is immature, ignorant, and most of all, wrong. Your insults only show me that you garner some form of jealousy towards these “stupid fucking Americans”.

  • Floresdaniel248

  • SB

Good essay, shame about the fucktards leaving comments.  I know we should be letting everyone have their say, Human Right’s and so on.
But these people are physically making the world dumber.  I personally feel that after reading some of these comments I have lost about 3 grams of brain matter just from the radiating stupidity of some people.
Different countries speak different languages, in the same way that different Counties / States (dependant on which side of the water you are) can have completely different dialects.

If we all spoke the same, did the same this place would be dull as fuck & we would never achieve anything as the human race.

I am English, I speak English – that doesn’t mean I think American is wrong, it means it is a different god damned mother fucking language!

In regards to the comments about the UK hiding behind America – check your history fella, America historically follows where the UK leads, if this is not the case it turns into one almighty clusterfuck.  This is where the UK will then have to come in and clean the military mess up.
BEFORE I get any rants about military might, I am not knocking the Armed forces themselves. America (much like Britain) is run by idiots, we have just had a lot more experience in running empires / countries than Americans do, not to say we do it better it just seems to take a little longer before we fuck it up.

Very amusing! Please be sure to post whether your instructor reacted or not to your work- I am certainly interested in the results of this experiment. :) As a current college student I have to admit that often times I wonder if our instructors/professors review all of the work submitted. Thanks for sharing (and for the smile.)

As for the comments…wow. So much cussing and name calling- neither of which I would deem as intelligent matter. I grew up near Canada and am accustomed to the whole ‘colour,’ ‘cheques,’ etc although utilize what is typically construed as appropriate spelling for American English. There is much to say about dialect; Americans need to consider just the difference in sentence structure, word usage, etc when comparing the different portions of the states, ie North and South. In terms of the British, many of their spellings, which lean towards the elegance of France, per say,  were incorporated from the French. We ALL need to consider how our languages were influenced by other regions/countries as well as the history of the area we are living in.

While sometimes it may be easier if all countries were on the same page in terms of language, spelling, measurements and beyond I like the diversity of cultures. Instead of slamming each other, do some research on the other cultures. I don’t doubt that we all think our ‘home’ is superior but everyone needs to take consideration when making such close minded comments. If you were born elsewhere, I am sure you’d be singing a different tune!

This is why, I, as an American constantly lose faith in my own country (as far as much of society).  Starting fights and telling people they’re wrong just cause they have a different custom? Who the hell cares, get over it.  Neither way of spelling things is wrong, its just different customs, accept it.  Just cause its the American way doesn’t make it the right way or the only way. So many Americans wonder why much of the world doesn’t have a favorable view of Americans?  Its because that vast majority think that as an American, we are superior to much of the world and do the exact type of things done here, which is tell someone their custom is wrong just because its not ours.

  • Rhys

ROFL “oddly enough the “s” has become accepted as an alternative spelling” ummm… no the ‘s’ is real English used by every English speaking country except the U.S.

  • guest

The ‘real’ English you speak of, that is, British English, is actually further deviant from the original Saxon than you may believe. As Webster was a hard-line nationalist, and advocate of spelling reform, his dictionary attempted to remove the Latin/French spelling of the words from the language. The state of British English was to be content in carrying on as Frenchmen. You see, it is in fact an oddity that the birthplace of a language is also the home of its perturbation. The problem, then, is not that it is the ‘real’ English, so much as that it is a few hundred years in the making of a new forged Romanized English. But surely, the Empire’s English, by virtue of it’s majority, is indubitably the real English. Or is it Anglais?

  • Ant84begg

It’s spelt ‘organisation’ in the UK

  • I’m from england bitch

In England we use an s in organisation
