Trailer for The Master, the Next Paul Thomas Anderson Movie, is Extremely Unsettling [Video]

If you’ve been jonesing for some Paul Thomas Anderson ever since Daniel Day Lewis discussed milkshake theft and screamed about how he was finished in There Will Be Blood, never you fear, as the trailer for Anderson’s next movie, The Master, has arrived. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams, the movie revolves around the titular Master, played by Joaquin Phoenix, who leads something of a religious cult that begins to gain popularity across 1950s America. The trailer is incredibly unsettling, and sure looks promising.

    P. T. Anderson is quite an impressive director. Though it sort of puts me off that each of his films is an experiment in another director’s style. Boogie Nights = Tarantino. Punch Drunk Love = Godard. There Will Be Blood = Kubrick. I’m curious as to whose style The Master is going to borrow from, or if Anderson has done something wholly novel. Either way, Anderson’s trailers always make me want to stand up and clap.

You guys should also note that the cult in the film is purported to be based somewhat on Scientology. The dates of the beginning of “The Cause” (the cult in the film) coincide historically with the beginning of Scientology. Not to mention that Philip Seymour Hoffman, who is to play the leader of the organization, bares a remarkable physical similarity to L. Ron Hubbard, the science fiction author turned founder of Scientology. I’m surprised you guys didn’t mention any of this, considering L. Ron Hubbard is a famous science fiction author. Arthur C. Clarke even thought him a rather good writer.
