Twitch Plays Pokémon Was Thwarted by the Wrath of Lord Helix at the End of Pokémon Crystal

Yes, the hive-mind has already gotten to the end of Crystal Version.

If you were ever into the Pokémon games, you probably know that when you play the second generation of games, you get to take on the trainer from the first generation at the end. Well, Twitch Plays Pokémon finally reaped what they had sown when they came face to face with Red at the end of Crystal, and he was sporting their whole Pokémon team from the first game.

For now, the end of Twitch Plays Pokémon is nowhere in sight. After tens of thousands of people somehow beat Pokémon: Red Version together by all pretty much shouting instructions at the game at the same time, they moved on to Crystal version.

I haven’t been very invested in the second round, because it seems like they’re probably going to just play through all of the games until no one cares anymore, but the coder behind the streaming channel threw a fun curveball (I did a sports!) at everyone by editing the final trainer’s team.

He’s supposed to come equipped with some of the staples from the first generation Pokémon games like the starters, Blastoise, Charizard, Venusaur, and Pikachu, and an Espeon and Snorlax to round out the team. Instead, he’d been altered so that the players came face-to-face with their former selves.

Twitch Fights Red

Well that was unexpected.

Yep, he came prepared for battle complete with Lord Helix the Omastar and the rest of the ragtag, oddly nicknamed team (though the nicknames seemed to be missing, sadly), and fittingly, the Twitch Plays Pokémon crew was struck down by the very god they worship. It looks like their old team wasn’t so silly after all, and Red isn’t a half bad trainer when he’s not hearing voices, walking in circles, and repeatedly jumping down from the same ledge over and over.

I’m glad the TPP coder decided to throw in a fun easter egg for everyone at the end of the game, and if he wants to keep people invested, it’d be nice if more throwbacks would follow in the inevitable upcoming games.

The players are currently trying to level up so they can go another round with their former selves and maybe come out victorious this time, so if you want to track their progress, you can check out some of our previous coverage for the stream and their statistics and goals page.

The hand of Lord Helix is swift in its judgment.
