Aang is Not the Last Airbender: The 3 Biggest Unanswered Questions In Avatar

So there’s an Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, and, according to reliable sources, it sucks.

FORGET ABOUT THAT.

There’s an Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon, and it is still totally awesome.  By way of reinforcement, I give you my three favorite questions that were left completely unanswered over the course the series.  I’ll try to keep it to a level where non-fans can enjoy as well, but I won’t be able to do it without some spoilers.  If you’re only part-way through the series, or plan on watching it later, consider yourself warned.

1. Zuko’s Mother

Zuko’s mother Ursa, though she appears only in a few episodes, is still one of the strongest female characters on a show that does not lack for well-rounded women.  Zuko, if you are familiar with the show, has something of a difficult family life.  His father Ozai and sister Azula are both power hungry megalomaniacs who would try to kill or maim him whenever it is politically expedient for them — and on one occasion, his father does. His mother was a stable and protective force in his childhood, until she disappeared on the same night that the current Fire Lord died, and his second son Ozai was placed on the throne instead of this firstborn.  A young Zuko was woken by his mother in the middle of the night, as she tearfully told him to always remember who he was, no matter what … and then left.

Eventually we learn the whole story: The current Fire Lord Azulon had ordered Ozai to kill his own firstborn, as punishment for making a blatant and cowardly push to become his father’s heir. Ozai was perfectly content to execute his preteen son to get back in his father’s good graces.  Ursa convinced him not to do it, with an offer he couldn’t refuse.  It is implied that she either killed Azulon, or took the blame for killing Azulon.  With Iroh, the rightful heir, somewhere in transit from the Earth Nation, Ozai took the throne and Ursa was banished.

So the question is … where is Ursa?  In fact, the last time we see Ozai in the series, Zuko is asking him, in terms that cannot be refused, where his mother is.  But the series ended before we saw any results on the matter.

2. Iroh in the Spirit World

Uncle Iroh, the ultimately wise but mildly hedonistic guardian of Prince Zuko, does not look like he is one of the most dangerous firebenders in the world, but the viewer learns quickly.  Among his accomplishments are the only near successful siege of the Earth Kingdom capital Ba Sing Se, developing the only technique that allows a firebender to redirect lightning by watching the techniques of waterbenders, and successfully convincing the Fire Nation that he had slain the last living dragon so that the last two living dragons and the priests that protected them might live in peace.  The latter is the reason why he is known as The Dragon of the West.  It really gets to the point where, when he does or knows things that you would not think in a million years he could do or know, you just accept it.

He’s Iroh.

But there are a couple hints through the series that Iroh has one other unique ability: He has traveled in the spirit realm, a place that we otherwise only the Avatar himself visits.  This is apparently common knowledge in the Fire Nation. And just so we know that it isn’t just Iroh covering for some spirits like he did for the dragons, Iroh also has the ability, shown by no other character in the series, to see spirits in the mortal realm even when they don’t want to be seen.

How did he get this ability?  Why did he venture into the spirit realm?  What did he do there?  The place is full of things like Ko. We’re given no clues.  But we’re sure it was awesome, and that’s why we want to know.

3. The Airbenders Themselves

Here’s a newsflash if you haven’t watched much of the series. Aang is very clearly not the last of the Airbenders.  In fact, when the show was released outside of America, it was called Avatar: The Legend of Aang.

This seems fairly obvious, once you consider it. If every Avatar must master all four bending arts, and the old Avatar must die in order for the new one to reincarnate, then if Aang really is the last airbender, the Avatar cycle breaks with his death. The next Avatar would have no one to learn airbending from.

But beyond the logical considerations, several details in the show subtly reinforce this idea without ever directly referencing it. The characters visit four different air temples (there are either four or five in total, depending on who you ask), but only the Southern Temple, the one closest to the Fire Nation, has any damage or signs of battle. While the Fire Nation is a nation, the Earth Kingdom a kingdom, and the Water Tribes are tribes, the airbenders are called nomads. When he finds that Fire Nation children are taught that their glorious leader Fire Lord Sozin defeated ferocious airbender armies, Aang responds “But the Airbenders had no armies.”  It is easy to see how the highly militaristic and xenophobic leaders of the Fire Nation might have inflated a single battle at one Temple into a glorious war, especially if they couldn’t find any other airbenders to fight.

After all, the Fire Nation supposedly routed the airbenders one hundred years before they gained access to airships.  It is very plausible that, after seeing the carnage at the Southern Air Temple (where, by the way, there are a great many Fire Nation bodies, and very few airbender bodies), the Air Nomads simply decided to pull up stakes and move somewhere were the other nations could not reach them since they were the only people in that time period who could fly.

If You’ve Gotten this Far

Let us know about your other unanswered Avatar questions in the comments!

And if you’ve gotten this far and you haven’t watched the series, I commend you.  At least now you can let everyone you know know that Aang isn’t actually the Last Airbender.  And please, consider watching the show.  It is very good.  Even Ebert thinks so.

We can only hope. Don’t get me started about my hypothetical 4th season of Avatar ideas >.<

  • G3NGHIS

They are making a new series called Avatar: Legend of Korra. We will probably hear more about it at Comic-Con!!!

  • ogenesis

This is what I’ve been trying to tell people! Aang can not be the last air bender because if he is the Avatar cycle ends because the next Avatar would need SOMEONE to teach them air bending! And as far as Iroh, yes he can see spirits. Remember when he was captured by the Earth Nation and he saw Aang flying on the spirit dragon and no one else saw it.

  • klebacher

If Aang were to have children, would they be able to airbend?

  • hppynut

one thing is that i don’t understand how nuns and monks are supposed to make babies?? i was very confused when aang is like hooking up with katara.
my second point is that even tho it’s pretty obvious that bending abilities are assigned genetically, but could they be assigned spiritually, like given by spirits?? if that’s the case, that makes sense if airbenders (monks and nuns) don’t have to make babies, and the bending ability is instead assigned to those people who live in that area with that group of people.
but Aang will have a son anyways cuz he’s with katara. i’m pretty sure that in order to balance the world, aang’s decedents will have to have airbending abilities.

  • bush363

    @ Hppynut

I don’t believe the show ever says that the monks are celibate, many of the monks in Japan as well as China can get married. Unless they are taking specific vows, many Monks and Nuns can and do marry within the monastery. I believe, but could be wrong, only the Christian religion requires Priests/Monks and Nuns to live a life of celibacy,

Here are a couple links with info on Buddhist monks

Here’s a thought. If Aang and Katara had children would they be Airbenders or Waterbenders?

  • birdytheblack

    1) the new avatar could learn it from being in avatar state (they become master of all elements)

    2) the next avatar could learn it through the spirit world. (talk to previous avatars)

    3) they could learn it how the original air nomads learnd it (by study flying bisons)

  • miley

Why we’re talking about Aang and Katara living together here?
Katara didn’t even know at all that Aang likes her anyhow, is there a book, as in hard bound book of The Legend of Aang or they said The Last Air Bender? Sometimes it’s better to read and more imaginative in books rather than movies.
    Thank’s!

  • vmarier

Everyone who is born into the Air Nomads is an airbender. Therefore Aang and Katara’s son (Tenzin) has mastered air and can teach the new avatar (Korra). Even though I have a feeling some air benders went into hiding and were still alive, there would be more airbenders by the time Korra was born. So the theory of the cycle being broken otherwise doesn’t prove that there were other airbenders around this whole time thanks to Aang’s offspring.

  • vmarier

    @klebacher

    Yes :)

  • firelordzukko

@vmarier im so glad that someone understands the avatar like i do. i started reading the comments and i realized that no one mentioned tenzin i was shocked then i saw your comment thank you. i would like to hear whatelse you have to say about the avatar: the last airbender. in the new series i wonder if any of team avatar is still alive? (not including Aang)

  • gemmaaaa

What’s going to happen to Appa and Momo? :(

  • los_lobos

okay, Aang IS the LAST airbender. no matter how you look at it, it’s impossible for them to return. the first piece of evidence: the flying bison are extinct (with the exception of Appa) so no new airbenders could learn how to airbend, the second piece: Zhao said that “the legends state that the Avatar will be the last of the airbenders” and we all know that legends in these types of shows are ALWAYS true. with the argument that the airbenders just fled their temples and aren’t actually dead, we must remember that airbenders wouldn’t have any means of communication between temples except for the occasional traveler and such so they couldn’t have evacuated before the fire nation attacked because they wouldn’t have known. while it IS possible that some may have been off on journeys and such (sort of like Aang) but don’t you think that if they were still around that someone would’ve seen them, or at least evidence of them, in the past 100 years or so? and for you saying that there aren’t 4 elements anymore, that’s not ENTIRELY true. if you recall, earthbenders cannot bend metals BUT Toph learned how, thus meaning that it’s a separate element and can be learned so it is my belief that either the next Avatars will learn airbending from their previous lives OR they will not master airbending but they will learn metalbending in it’s place (yes i know it’s not really a balanced set of elements but it make the most sense to me)

  • metalbender

it is not impossible, Katara’s mother and father weren’t water benders, neither of them, how did she become a water bender? it’s not through parentage obviously. The firebenders learnt from the dragons but they do not coexist with firention, how does firebending continue? does this mean airbenders can learn through themselves or from Aangs son perhaps (legend of Korra fact). I doubt metal bending will become a new elment but and extension of earthbending, much as lightning is to firebenders. Metal has come from heated ore therefore is part of earth and can be bent (bended?).
My compliments to the thoughts of hppynut

@gemmaaaa Momo was living in the temple and there are probably others at the temple just not found by Aang
@vmarier Boomy(however its spelt) is 110 years old or close to it, perhaps earthbenders live longer than normal and Toph is therefore the most likely to live.

  • Doridor

    @metalbender

I applaud your knowledge of avatar :D
And you’re partially right that gaining the skill of bending an element isn’t hereditary, as it never disproved in the anime (as far as I can remember). I like the idea that if youre born into a certain environment then you can gain bending from that.

Metal bending will not become another element. If it does, so does lightning bending, ice bending, snow bending and plant bending. They just won’t do it.
    And yes, bent :P

  • ErutanNamuh8

This thread is awesome!! But I have a few things to add according to my study of the show. For starters, let’s remember that all air nomads are born airbenders and just need to master the bending art. But the original airbender was the sky bison… so already there is a loophole. Appa exists as well, making him an airbender too… so there are two airbenders at the very start of the series. Second, Aang has learned from the Lion Turtle the power to bend energy, and we watched him take Ozai’s firebending away. Isn’t it realistic that he could use the same power to Energybend an element INTO a person? Then he could give Sokka the power to, oh say, Firebend = P. Also, we learned in the final episodes that the ancient sun warriors were said to have died out many years ago, yet an entire civilization remained on the island Aang and Zuko visited. No one knew they were there except Iroh (and now, of course, Zuko and Aang), but isn’t it possible that the airbenders (if not all of them, then perhaps just some) remained in hiding as well? Airbenders by nature are not warmongers, and the martial art that airbending mimics is baguazhang, an art that basically means to evade your enemy. If they have mastered the art of evasion, I think the air nomads could survive a hundred years hidden, just as the sun warriors and the last two dragons have. Who knows… airbenders may even be in the spirit world. Iroh made his way there, and airbenders themselves are 1,000x more spiritualistic than he is…

    Just a thought. :-) More later, i I can think of it…

  • redrose91

OK, 1) The first two aren’t completely wrong. Iroh went into the spirit world, much like Zuko, due to a traumatic event. Zuko’s inner self was at war, and Iroh lost his son, Lu Ten. He’s a wise old man who love his tea. He doesn’t see spirits, he just sees things faster than most people. Yue is the only person with white hair, Tui is a white Coi Fish! He went into the spirit world “Looking for Lu Ten”, but it was loosing his son, as I said, which sent him there in the first place! 2) The cycle won’t end. Aang will most likely have an airbender child. Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko have said that he married Katara and had at least one child, named Ten Zen. Ten Zen is an airbender. He is the new Avatar’s airbending teacher, since being trapped in an iceberg for a century caused Aang to die in his sixties. Don’t understand, watch the series over again, search for Avatar Extras, or go to the Avatar Wikia(Wiki) page!!!

PREQUEL: Air — Air is the first in the cycle and should be the story of Aang as a child and the final downfall of the Air Nomads that leads up to Water. Air is the backstory.

    Tenzin DOES airbend.

will there be a story that follow zuko

  • seeking1

Idk he will not be the last one but I think there would be someone who is later BORN as an airbender. That’s what I think

  • seeking1

No he doesn’t he’s a guru. He has no bending powers. He just knows of them all

  • seeking1

Why a son? Why not a daughter?

  • seeking1

    Or maybe not lol

  • No name

The creators confirmed in an interview that there really aren’t anymore airbenders.

  • No name

Also, they said that bending is based on spirituality, nationality, and a bit of genetics, so you can’t just learn it, you’re born with it.

  • Qw1weeu

There is one more airbender. Aang and Katara have a child named Tenzin who is an airbender. The next avatar goes to him.

  • kataang fan4444

ok i thing the thing that everyone is saying is very interesting but i want to know when the ledge of korra is going to start play on tv.also how did aang die if boomy lives for at least 112 years and aang lives to be 60. minus the fact that he was in the iceberge for 100 yaers

  • http://www.facebook.com/GeorgianSoulja Givi Mamatsashvili

Aang is not the last airbender after he has a son Tenzin. tenzin is the airbending master of the Avatar korra (next avatar after aang from water tribe) so maybe aang could teach nonbender people airbending and make new era of airbenders or something? if you have watched sozin’s comet you know that aang learn energy bending and than takes firebending of firelord ozai every avatar can learn energy bending but aang kinda got received it like a gift… and btw we don’t know if aang and katara have only one son they might have others too and they might be airbenders also… and there’s something with iroh cuz we know that the only bridge from humans to spirits is the avatar (and iroh too maybe? lol) iroh FTW

  • Poop

you people are idiots, why not just watch the series and find out ya dumbos

  • the omniscent lion turtle

has anyone noticed that the lion turtle stated that his people have imbued the power of themselves into the living creatures of the four nations. maybe the lion turtles can inbue a select amount of people with the power to airbend.

Now i have found some good imfo on all the Qs the new series caled legend of Korra is a mini seris that will take place in november of 2011 the the date is not yet set. Ive been wating for somthing like this for a wile go to google and look up legend of korra and it will give as much info as been released to the public it looks good.

  • Chiro

What were the little hints that they gave us about Iroh being able to contact the spirit world? I don’t remember anything about that except that he’s just wise and learns from his mistakes. If someone could enlighten me I would be forever grateful. ^^

  • flamingohotman

It was when Iroh got captured by the earthbenders(When him and Zuko separated) , he saw Aang coming back from the spirit world and when he was at the Northern Water Tribe he was talking to the General and the General was aware of his travel to the spirit world.

  • Meme

Fact: All air nomads are born air benders. It was on one of the special editor note things that pop up in certain episodes.

If Aang had a kid who was an airbender, he could teach the kid airbending, then when he died, the next avatar could learn from the kid. Then the air nomad population could repopulate :)

As for the kid somehow being a waterbender or something instead of an air bender, i just dont know how that works.

Azula is a loose end in the story, I don’t know what happened to her after Katara kick her butt.

Jet is not. Jet died, remember?

Ursa, Zuko’s mother, is another loose end, we may never know unless they reveal the answers in the (rumored) series Legend of Korra.
Yeah, hope that clears some people up :D

  • KIA

I know everyone says that there will be another series about the avatar world called the legend of Kora, and as much as i want to believe it, i just cant. there are several major clues pointing to it being a rumer and nothing more.
    (1) There is no, i repeat no hints of another series on Nickaloadeon or any of the official websites.
    (2) If they were writing another series they would have done it already.
    (3) The first time i heard of said ‘series’ it was on a site much like this one in the comments section, and i searched vigorously for more information on it, finding nothing, However a few weeks later it was poping up everywhere.
I know its disapointing people but some writers have this weird idea that their fans enjoy cliffhangers and see them as an oppertunity to imagine an ending of their own.

  • http://www.facebook.com/i3rucei3ruce Bruce Spart Ludlow

First of all, just because the Avatar would need it doesn’t mean it logically MUST happen. That is a logical fallacy that the author commits.
Secondly, the dragons taught firebending, those large badger things taught earthbending, the moon taught waterbending, and Aang himself said that the flying bisons taught airbending. To think that a human must randomly be thrust into this equation for airbending to be re-taught is a completely illogical statement and lacks evidence of any deductive reasoning. In fact, WITHIN THE SHOW we are shown ILLUSTRATED CHARACTERS TEACHING THEMSELVES FORMS OF BENDING- Toph TEACHES HERSELF to metalbend, the old lady taught HERSELF to bloodbend as a captive, NOT TO MENTION it is REPEATEDLY stated and SHOWN that the Avatar can SPONTANEOUSLY bend elements through the avatar state.

And you (the author) keeps saying that Aang isn’t the last airbender. Eh… You sure about that? Remember, when Aang is talking about how it isn’t possible to reach the air temples without flying, he (not to mention the members of his party) had NEVER seen the Fire Nation’s tanks- the ones that can climb vertical cliffs! Forgot that little detail, did we?

  • Firebender

We don’t know what happened to Ursa or Azula. I like the Aang, Katara, Sokka generation, so I wish they would make a new series about their other adventures or at least Zuko’s or the Kyoshi warriors. That would be cool.

  • elizabeth

Well i only know stuff about your last question. In the 2012 series we will see the next avatar:Korra,a girl from the water tribe. She will have mastered fire, earth, water but she only needs to find avatar Aang and Katara’s son Tenzin. He knows airbending and he will teach Korra ,so she can win the anti-benders.

  • elizabeth

Ohh and the creators of the series will make a new episode which talks about Zuko’s mother.

And don’t forget that Iroh had been knowing about the ancient fire nation secrets.Dragons had revealed to him much things.

  • Kenamaru

Metal bending wont because it a extinction of earth like previous noted because of blood bending would not be a thing a avatar would do even with stealth its too vicious aka anger bending Healing i can see but is still question cause avatar is not suppose to interfere just guide

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001420833611 Eric Fox

I agree with all of this post except one thing…. just because there is no one for the next
avatar to learn air bending from, that does not stop the cycle it just prevents the next avatar from learning air bending.

  • http://www.light-of-ar.blogspot.com FanOfAr

I’ve had the thought that what if the Airbenders at the Northern Air Temple escaped through the natural-gas caves that were afterwards sealed off and have been living underground (literally!) ever since?  The Northern Air Temple is on the same continent as the Earth Kingdom, so I wonder if some Earthbenders might have gone down with them and helped them through / created the caves, while the Airbenders bended the gas away and brought air down there…at least until they were down far enough to be away from the natural gas.  If that would be the case, then when the gas exploded, they would have heard it, and maybe some would come up and investigate…?  Idk, it’s just an idea…

  • Orcaboy12345

aang and katara have a airbender son who teaches korra (the new avatar) airbending

  • MarcEmarc

Ive read through the comments and I see that everyone has acquired a vast knowledge of avatar and it was really interesting reading the comments.
I think that an interesting theorie would be that anyone could aquire the ability to bend any element.
If you all take a look back at the last episode, the giant lionturtle says that before the age of the elemental benders, they used to bend the energie in peoples bodies. In the last fight Aang took away Ozais ability to bend fire. I wonder if he had the ability to give the power to bend elements as well.

  • Lazzuras

Aang isn’t the last of the Airbenders because in the legend of Korra Aang’s son is also an airbender and is the that will teach Korra how to bend air.

  • Anonymous

I seriously needed to add my knowledge into this thread.
If you have not watched the actual anime/cartoon series and only watched the movie . DO NOT go by the movie . The movie had only 40% of it right. The rest … was just crap.

Avatar: The last Airbender …. Aang WAS the last air bender in his time . During the whole series he was alone . The ONLY one of his kind. That’s why they named it the last airbender .

Now of course he can have children with Katara . He was in Love with her . They were both in love …. If you watched the actual series … you would know that. You have to watch it, it’s really good.

Of course their children would either be Water Benders or Air Benders.
    Bending is Genetically passed on.

Just remember that this is in the future way, way past when he was alone.

Just thought I should share that … yeah .

  • Micheria101

They announced it last year at Comic-Con 2010 .
It takes YEARS to make a animation so complicated as avatar so o fcourse they aren’t going to just whip it out of thin air .

  • Micheria101

.. he was in an ice berg for 100 years .
Technically he was like 142 years old . remember the ice berg isn’t healthy like .. think about it .. you wont live for a long time after your organs have been frozen for that long .

  • Zinegirl

According to the fact that no one could reach the airtemples unless they could fly, when Sozin’s comet arrived, Ozai could fly. And so could Sozin en the rest of the firebenders when they whiped out the airbenders.

  • Guestquest

Does anyone remember the Avatar the Last Airbender trading cards? I think somewhere on the box, promo, or whatever said that the new characters featured within the card game where to appear on the show. Since that never happened will they make an appearance on The Legend of Korra? If I remember correctly there was an airbender girl/ghost,a evil(?) male waterbender, and some old airbender master who supposedly helped the fire nation whip out the airbenders.

  • Guestquest

he could only fly, do to using his firebending like a jet pack

  • Sydney

Air is the last one in the cycle. If you pay attention to the theme in the beginning of each episode, you will notice how it goes, water, earth, fire, and THEN air.

  • You

    Heheh

  • Sup3rlover2

Or he could be born without bending powers at all. Bending powers are pretty random. Katara was the only one in her family, for at least a few generations, that could bend

  • Sup3rlover2

Just because there isn’t anyone to learn airbending from does not mean the Avatar would cease to exist. The person born as the Avatar isn’t born knowing how to bend all of the elements, they are simply born with the ability.

  • Sup3rlover2

Also to the author, Iroh is not the only other character besides Aang that can see spirits. Katara saw the painted lady.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KJNZIC2GE2G67IGMX4PTMTSTLE Melody

It’s unclear if Jet is dead or alive. In the episode where he could have died it did leave a pessimistic feeling, but when they watch the play in book 3 Sokka says that the situation is unclear (and not in a sad way).

  • Anonymous

    no … He died .

During the play they weren’t sure what happened so they were just going off of what they knew .
but in the actual episode Jet died .

  • Anonymous

Yeah you are right the Avatar would only cease to exist if you die while you are in the avatar state .

  • Anonymous

Yeah .. but all air nomads can bend . So i’m assuming since it will be Aangs offspring that he will know how to bend because of his blood line .

  • Anonymous

Bro we are talking about the tv series .

  • Anonymous

But metal bending isn’t a element of it’s own .. it’s apart of earth . just like you can be a water bender you can bend mud and other liquids . Korra can still learn Air Bending through Tenzin, who is Aang’s son .

  • Alternator43

While this is technically correct, you forget that the series starts after air; beginning with Aang being discovered and learning waterbending.
Since we started with the air avatar having already mastered air bending, and learning water first, then a “book of air” would need to be a prequel.

  • Alternator43

Yes but even if you master the avatar state, it’s debatable whether you can teach yourself an entirely new element.
Toph didn’t teach herself earth bending, she learned one original aspect of it from the badgermoles and expanded her abilities from that knowledge. Its the same with the other animals and the moon with their bending skills.
There are still two dragons left, and I think it’s safe to assume the moon is still there and still plenty of badgermoles/earth benders…but if Appa is the last flying bison, and Aang’s kid isn’t an air bender (or if we don’t find some more air nomads) then the cycle is done.

  • Anonymous

The new avatar will learn air bending from Tenzin . ( Aang and Kataras son )

  • AvatarRocks

In the Avatar the Last Airbender: The Legend of Korra Aang and Katara have children.  One of them is an airbender, his name is Tenzin. Tenzin has 3 airbending children, Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo. Tenzin teaches Korra airbending. Tenzin also has a wife named Pema. By the end of the show their will be 5 existing airbenders. Aang and the gang are all dead. Korra is from the Southern Water Tribe and she has a pet Polar Bear Dog named Naga. One of Korra’s friends, Bolin, has a pet Fire Ferret named Pabbo. Bolin has an older brother Mako. Toph’s daughter is the chief of metalbending police taught by Toph herself. The enemy of the series is Oman, a masked man who leads an antibending organization. the series takes place in Republic City or United Republic. It is a steampunk city with big buildings, cars, and motorcycles. The Avatar world has been improved a lot in the last 70 years. I hope everyone is looking forward to the new show as much as I am. Bye.

Yeah you are right but with every Avatar no matter what they can bend they have to master water first. Air is always last. Remember when Roku went to the water tribe even though he already knew fire he still went in order and mastered fire bending . If the Air Nomads were still alive, he would have went back to master it .

  • Anonymous

Yeah i’m psyched thank you for the info . =)

  • Catveta

not all airbending children airbend, because aang has three children, only one of which is an airbender.

  • Catveta

not all airbending children airbend, because aang has three children, only one of which is an airbender.

  • jacob

Aang and Katara have a son who is an air bender and teaches the next avatar

  • jacob

the painted lady chose to reveal herself to Katara

  • Taylarwiseman

i heard they find more bison in the new season

  • Taylarwiseman

ok chill the chiz out hes an airbender and he teaches korra how to. thats what the season is about

  • Micheria101

Where did you read that ? ..  Yeah I was thinking that because i’m sure some kids would be water benders because of Katara .

  • Sambug399

I was wondering, who is aang’s mother? They never mention her. Also, did you here that they’re coming out with a new avatar. But it’s called avatar the legend of korra. I can’t wait!

  • Miang

Very good points! I agree with all except the last..

I did also consider that if Aang died, it WOULD break the cycle.. but I just assumed that he would have air bender kids with his honey to carry on for their people ;p

And now that there’s more info on the next air bender series, it turns out that’s what happens! There will be air bender descendents of Aang and Katara. :) Slowly but surely there will be more air benders in the world.

a son being because the new incarnation of the avatar is reborn as a girl balancing it out and if you think about it all the masters that showed aang to master the elements were sought in being male even though aang sticks with katara for waterbending and toph for earthbending because they are easier access for him to bend

  • sauri92

and aang also dies for he energy bent which has critical consequences whom uses energybending if not fully mastered or known of all its power could kill or terminate life faster which for what is said does and i think he dies too because there was a reincarnated avatar aloof

  • Leo White

Aang is the last airbender during the time when he beats fire nation leader Ozai.
The next avatar goes to learn airbending from his children so basically he is the last airbender of his generation.  Just not the absolute last airbender which are his descendants.
You could also say he is the last “pureblood” airebender.  His children are descendants of him and Katara who is a waterbender and not a part of the air nomads herself.

  • Anonymous

Aang was raised by monks . He didn’t have a mom . I’m sure he had a birth mother it’s very confusing idk .

The problem is not that the next Avatar would have nobody to teach him airbending, but that there would be no airbender born.
If nobody gives birth to an airbender (which will happen because there are in fact no more airbenders who can get children) the avatar cycle will go on but when it reaches the airbender, there will be no one to pick out to be the avatar.

  • Roku

….so the cycle stops when the next firebender avatar dies.

i think the sand benders are air benders because on that episode the sand benders used the sand which looked like a small tornado to move their ships and probably just are hideing thier true identity’s

That’s true, but the spirt wanted Katara to see her, just like the angry spirt in the episode “The spirt world”. The only explanation is spirits can show themselves to mortals if they wish to be seen.

  • #1 Kataang fan! : )

…and Ozi was propably the only firebender good enough to do that.

From what ive read in many diff places all three of Aang and kataras children are air benders!

dont 4get that azula done it at the boiling rock! and that was without the power of sozins comet :P

  • Slycooper88

thats no true roku learned air first then water then earth

  • air

avatar and katara have 3 kids one is a airbend and he has 4 other airbender kis makes 5 airbenders so avatar will still be for a very long time or maybe forever

  • NatureBender1

It is pretty much a known fact that the Airbenders were VERY spriritual. I mean, they had a room with statues of ALL the Avatar’s. So, then, is it so hard to believe that they hid in the Spirit World. I mean, the Spirits are all about keeping the peace. So, keeoing that in mind, I think that the Spirits would allow much of the Airbenders into the Spirit-World only because the Fire Nation was atacking them. Also, if this is true, Aang is technically “the last airbender”. He is so because the Spirit World and the regular world are completely different. Aang would be the last Airbender in the regular world, so therefore the last Airbender for all that people know.

  • Tenzin

isnt it safe to assume that all of his children can bend

  • Tenzin

    i think so as well

  • Jonathan luna

there are a lot of enteresting info here bt in this series Aang “was” the last airbender, it wasn’t until the next series with the next avatar (Legend of Korra) that they mensioned  that Aang and Katara had 3 children, and all of them infact knew airbending and tought korra how to airbend

  • Bob

Aang kissed Katara at the end of the series, how would she not know that he likes her?

  • Pskinner46

So Aang and katara end up together right, so how does the kid turn out? Waterbender, Airbender, or normal???

  • Ariki0

i get the first two not the last they did damage the air temples the one underground was damaged and i dont mater about the air water earth fire at the end of the day as long as the avarter is alive he ca make new warter benders or air benders or fire so on

i havent been able to find this but i haer he has three kids and one of them is a air bender and this is just what i think that becouse of aang and katarra have kids and katerra being water i think the next avartar will be aang son but thats what i think

oh and did he find a ne breed of flying thing biyson cos i heard he did

  • Musiciangrl06

Roku went to the southern air temple first as since in the Avatar and the Firelord episode

  • Smileyrocks

where  can i find the air coz i need to know what happens and does anng and katarra have kids?

  • person

Roku went to master air first. Then water then earth was the last one he mastered.

  • Elmtone77

Aangs son teaches the next avatar air bending and the questions about zukos mom will probably be answered in the promise trilogy. Idk bout iroh.

  • Nenehuck

not true aang all ready mastered air. they said it in the show

  • gold mercury

    book five; powerless

  • Warrior-meg

New update, aang could actualy be the last airbender because they are creating a new series to be released in summer where te new avatar learns air from aangs son instead. The show is similar to the original avatar title and is going to e called avatar: the legend of korra (I’m not sure if I spelled that right…) so although all the other signs say he isn’t the last one this new series could in fact tell us that he really was the last airbender. Good questions though…. I have always wanted to know the answer to all of these questions myself. I REALLY want to know where Zukos mom is! (suppose it will be in the new series?)

  • Jack Randell

    fire is better

  • Joe

Your theory explains a lot true. But where in the world could the air nomads live for a century unnoticed? The answers are up the the people who write the storyline. However, theoretically bending is a recessive gene in the Avatar’s world, bt is not uncommon like O type blood is in ours. So technically if Aang and Katara (or whoever Aang’s future spouse is) reproduce and their offspring could learn airbending. Because in their world people are limited to only bending one element (excluding the Avatar) however they are not limited to the bending of their nationality. Because their power source is chi, and there is no air chi, water chi, etc. only chi. So technically someone from the Earth Kingdom can learn air bending. Theoretically.

  • Joe

You clearly have not watched all the episodes in cronological order, or your just forgetful, no offense. The order is Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. Air is always first in the Avatar cycle, meaning the first Avatar ever was an air nomad.

  • Micheria101

Guys so how come the cycle goes : Water, earth, fire, air . I think it jut depends on what element you’ve already mastered. So if Katara happened to be the avatar she would master earth next . Which is why Roku went to air … Mmkay buy bye.

  • Pahach14

There is the questions of what happened to azula after the last episode and I think that aang should live forever ( not a question but I think he should and they should make a continued series with him and everybody else in it at the same age as this series) also, I would like to know if the southern water benders actually got any more water benders. Couldn’t Hama just get out of prison again anyways?

  • fan

actually air is the first.  the beginning of the cycle.  With Aang, an airbender, a new cycle was formed, and a golden age of peace began.  Then the cycle repeats itself.  The fire, the most dangerous element is always last.

  • Skyler

He was the last airbender, sorry. Aang has a son who has 3 children. its up to Aangs family to repopulate the airbenders. You will learn this once The legends of Kora is released.

  • Skyler

not true. the avatar has to stay in cycle. it goes air water earth fire.. the avatar starts with his nationalities element.. say the avatar came as an earth bender, first it would be earth, then fire, air and then water.

  • Daniel2001

But Tenzin son of Aang and Katara can bend air too,so he can traning many others peoples who can`t bending and then air nomads will be again!

  • star

But after book 3 Aang can teach people airbending and Aang and Katara have son Tenzin and he can bend air too! So, air nomads will be again!

  • Ledwell Ginny

You bring up some very interesting points. Up until now I had always taken it for granted that the fire nation wiped out all of the air nomads but now I wonder… could the fire nation really have killed EVERYONE? Especially when they had no way of even GETTING to the temples (something Aang himself pointed out during the second or third ep.)?
Then again 1) Aang also said during this episode “if they found this temple, they could have gotten to the others too. I really AM the last airbender” 2) why would the fire nation attack the southern air temple without going taking out the western air temple first? 3) why would the air benders keep their survival a secret from the rest of the world (besides maybe wishing to stay out of the war?) 4) maybe the other temples did have gore, but later inhabitants cleaned the place up. 5) the episode about the northern air temple does sorta/kinda explain how other people could get to the temples without bison and 6) airbenders were peaceful and probably reluctant to fight others, while firebending soilders are ruthless and bloodthirsty. So the idea that fire nation soilders were able to kill off a lot of airbenders in one blow doesnt seem that far-fetched.
Still, the fact that they didnt at least make a flashback showing the details of what happend always did kind of irk me. And dont forget some of the biggest mysteries of all: what happened on the Darkest Day of Fire Nation History? And what was the fate of Jet and his friends of lake laogi? I just hope that all of these questions are answered in the Legend of Kora.

  • Guest7

Then why Avatar starts with Waterbending??

Because he have mastered airbending and the is water the earth the fire and it ends ok..?

  • Maximum-rhy

actually, that is not true. You have to learn in the order of the cycle. Roku learned air first, then water, then earth.

  • Master Avatar

actually if you look back at the tv series Roku mastered Air then water and finally earth.  it all goes in the order of the avatar cycle, water to earth to fire and lastly air. and Roku masters fire before her sets out as the avatar and only returns to the fire nation when he is done with his avatar training

  • Phantomwickedness

The new series to debut the summer of 2012, the Legend of Korra, follows the life of the avatar AFTER Aang.  Korra, who is a water bender, has mastered all elements but air.  The single book of this coming series is the final fourth book.  Air.

How is it that master pakkou is able to teach waterbending to the people of the southren water tribe if Katara is the last waterbender of the tribe and only a selected few are able to bend, which means NOBODY BUT KATARA CAN BEND THAT ELEMENT IN THAT TRIBE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Prodigiousness22

Very interesting, but one mistake the southern airtemple isn’t the closest to the fire nation that would be the western airtemple that’s why they go there when they flee the fire nation in book 3. Also a question. Not an arguement just an interesting question. I like the theory that maybe the airbenders didn’t all die off and it makes sense, but if that’s the case then why did the fire nation not pursue them? I feel like the fire nation wouldn’t have let that slide so easily they wouldn’t stop at anything til they knew all the air nomads were dead

  • http://www.facebook.com/arohan.kumar Barney Ross Arohan

    Since Appa will give kids.

Like Zoku and Aang learned fire bending from dragon others will learn from their Sky Bisions
And Aang will also give some afforts and will teach some people air bending and he will have his son toooooooo

  • beatlefan27

Aang WAS an airbending master. That’s what the arrow tattoos indicate. And as for Avatars mastering the elements, they would start with their own element. Take Roku for instance. He mastered fire, then went to the Southern Air Temple to learn and master airbending (this is also where he met and befriended Gyatso). Then he went to the Northern Water Tribe to learn and master waterbending. Then he went to the Earth Kingdom to learn earthbending. So, in Roku’s case, he mastered fire first, air second, water third, and earth last. The Avatar masters the elements in order, but from the perspective of their birth element.
So an Avatar with the water birth element would master water, earth, fire, then air. An earth Avatar would master earth, fire, air, then water. See how it goes?

  • DragonOfTheWest

I know there are tons of comments already but I’m to lazy to read them all. Your first two questions are valid I’m sure the 1st will be answered in the comic books and relooked at in the Legend of Korra. Idk about Iroh I wish they’d give us further insight. The 3rd though is stupid. Aang is the last airbender on earth during the time of the show. I realize he is the avatar, and avatars can air bend, but he is hereditarily the last of the airbenders. He was born an airbender and into the nomads. So the next avatar will be a water bender at first.  Also, the name “The Legend of Aang” is only that in different countries because either “bender” doesn’t translate or it means something different, may be offensive from what I’ve heard/read. He is obviously the last Airbender, hence the creators named the show that, you know because they thought of it and meant for him to be the last airbender. Lastly, you probably already know this but in order for there to be more airbenders Aang must have kids, and he does… his son, Tenzin, an airbender, teaches the new avatar.

  • DragonOfTheWest

well all the non benders in the southern water tribe could have had water bending parents and therefore had the “gene” or whatever it is that is magical and gives them the ability to bend. So hypothetically if they had kids they could be water benders, the bending just skipped a generation in the family. Just my theory:)

  • DragonOfTheWest

all we know for sure is that aang and katara get married and can speculate that suki and sokka, and mai and zuko get married and for sure toph gets married because her daughter is in the legend of korra. I think she may have married haru(sp?) from the earth kingdom.

  • George

Uh, Aang is the the last air bender for some time. He had children with Katara.. One of them was an airbender who taught the next avatar, Avatar Korra, to air bend..

  • George

You cannot teach a non-bender to air bend.. It’s either you’re a bender or not..

  • Thedarkhidesall

No you don’t learn water bending first, you learn the next element in the cycle. Water -> Earth -> Fire -> Air.  The cycle starts with the nation you are born into.

  • ilse

    you haven’t read The promise??

  • TLA

A circle has no beginning or end, all parts are part of a single whole. The Avatars if you will notice follow the learning of the elements on cycle, Aang’s cycle was disrupted and his traditional training was eschewed, he masters earth and water together. If you remember correctly the first element Roku learnt was air. :)

  • Cashes38

actually air isnt always last and they dont have to master water first, roku mastered air first because you have to master the next element after your oown natural one

  • Ezanegreen

another question is why the avatar can’t bend in the spirit world

  • Digimonmaster260

    THE LEGEND OF KORRA.

new avatar loue and peace   MY OPINION    I DO NOT AGREE SEASON OF

    AVATAR THE LEGEND OF KORRA

  • AVATARexpert

That is incorrect. The Avatars learned the elements in the order of the cycle, Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Roku told Aang that he learned Air first, training with Gyatso, then went to the Northern Water Tribe, then Learned Earth bending before returning to confront Sozin.

  • kbuck

well aangs kids would be airbenders and we find out in the new series he has one.

  • 1800fuckyou

False…. When you MASTER air bending, thats when you get the TATOO’S all avatar get the TATOO’s after mastering AIR BENDING

  • Jjdluigi11223344556644545431

Its dumb how it has you hanging for like 6 years to know if aang married Katara, Finally the legend of Korra comes out and he’d dead, lol, what is wrong with these guys

  • AVATARexpert

Incorrect. All Avatars do not get the arrow tattoos. The only Avatars who ever had them were the Airbender ones. The tattoos were for those born Air benders who became masters. Not just anyone could get them. Aang had them because he was born an Airbender. Avatar Roku did not have the tattoos, neither did Avatar Kyoshi.

  • AVATARexpert

You are wrong. If you watch the opening for Avatar: The Last Airbender, you hear Katara saying Water, Earth, Fire, Air. If you watch the Legend of Korra, you hear Tenzin saying Earth, Fire, Air, Water, because it follows the Avatar cycle, Water, Earth, Fire, Air, Water, Earth Fire, Air, Water. Whatever element the Avatar is born with is the first one they master. After they master that one, they move on continuing the cycle. That is why in the first episode you see Korra mastering Fire and then go on to Republic City to train with Tenzin, because she was following the cycle.

  • AVATARexpert

he has 3 actually, Kya (waterbender), Tenzin (airbender), and Boomy (nonbender)

  • AVATARexpert

I can explain this easily to you. In the world, the benders bend the elements of fire, earth, water, and air. In the spirit world, none of these things actually exist. You see them, but they are not actually made up of water and earth and fire and air. They are made up of some unknown spiritual particles. While they are definitely there, they are not however, elements that can be bent like that.

  • AVATARexpert

    Finally someone understands it.

  • AVATARexpert

Appa does not have kids. Team Avatar discovered a group of sky bison that were alive and Tenzin bonded with Oogi like Aang to Appa.

  • AVATARexpert

They did. The Air Nomads were actually betrayed by one of their own. (who was later killed by Sozin for some unknown form of treason). After the rest of the nomads fled, Sozin took relics from the temples and placed them in small huts and homes in various mountain ranges and made it to look as if some airbenders were living there. When the nomads went to check it out, they swooped in and finished them off.

  • AVATARexpert

Pakku did not go to the Souther Water Tribe to teach them waterbending. He said as they were leaving that he was going down there because it was time to help them rebuild, as in rebuild houses and a wall and help to fortify defenses and things like that. Not to teach waterbending.

  • AVATARexpert

All we know for certain is that she started a metal bending school.

  • AVATARexpert

In ancient culture the only people with surnames were those form wealthy families. Most people had them, but they were never important unless your family was well off, hence the Beifong family. The problem with that though is we never hear Zuko’s family name.

  • AVATARexpert

    1) They did get to the other temples.
    2) They took out the souther air temple because a monk who betrayed the nomads told them that was where the Avatar was.
    3) They airbenders never kept their survival a secret because they didn’t survive, except for Aang.
    4) The Fire Nation cleaned all of the temples and used them as well houses in the mountains as traps for the few remaining Airbenders who they wiped out.
    5) If you watch the episode with the other air temple they visited with the people who flew with the gliders, they fire nation tanks had grapple guns that they used to pull themselves up the mountain.
    6) Yes the airbenders were pacifists, but they would fight in self defense. Think of them as Shaolin monks. The Shaolin monks developed their fighting style as a form of self defense against raiders and bandits. Eventually like the air nomads, their lifestyle transferred into their fighting style and developed into a unique style of pacifism that could be used for self defense.
Jet died of internal injuries. If you don’t believe me you can check the wiki.
The darkest day in Fire nation history was just that…..dark…..because it was a solar eclipse and their bending left. It doesn’t mean anything else happened, but it was literally dark and figuratively, because they could not make fire.

  • AVATARexpert

You cannot train people to Airbend who are not born airbenders. Sorry, but the only airbenders will be descendants of Tenzin, and through him, Aang. For example, Tenzin has 3 kids and one more on the way, already there are 3 airbenders, there will be 4, and don’t forget about Korra, even though she is the Avatar she is still an airbender.

  • AVATARexpert

Aang dies at the age of 65. He didn’t live longer because he was locked in the Avatar state for 100 years and the stress on his body was immense to the point it would not last as long as all his friends.

  • AVATARexpert

yes, Aang was considered an Airbending master but that was only because he had invented a new move. To be an airbending master you had to master all 32 tiers of airbending and then develop a new technique. Aang only mastered 31, but becuase he invented the air scooter they gave him his tattoos.

  • AVATARexpert

For the next Avatar to be a child of Aang, Katar would have to have a waterbending child at the exact moment Aang died, possible, but not probable and it would make for a bad storyline.

  • AVATARexpert

1 of each. Kya — water, Tenzin — Air, Boomy — normal

  • AVATARexpert

If they were hiding in the spirit world, their bodies would still be in the living world. Also, besides the Avatar, General Iroh is the only person we know of who journeyed to the spirit world.

  • AVATARexpert

They are earthbenders who have adapted to the desert conditions. If you watch the episode where they take Appa, you will see them solidify the sand around their feet and ankles to keep Appa from pulling them down.

  • AVATARexpert

The only question that anyone can even know about from the original ones at the top is about the airbenders. No one knows anything about Ursa except that she was banished and has yet to show up again. No one knows how Iroh can see spirits either. What we do know is that Fire Lord Sozin, after conquering the Air Nomads by means of a traitor, who he later kills for an unknown form of treason, took relics form the Souther Air Temple and put them in buildings in the mountains to lure the remaining airbenders in so he could kill them. He also minimized damage to the other temples and fixed what damage there was so that he could lure more in. Ultimately, he killed them all because he tricked them into going to the other temples and to these “safe” buildings in the mountains where they thought other monks were living. As to the question of how they got up there, they used their tanks with the grappling hooks to climb up. And on a side note, while the Air Nomads could fly, they could only maintain flight as long as they could keep the air currents flowing under their gliders, and not many were strong enough to do so for an extended period of time, and definitely not long enough to outrun the fire nation.

If you have any questions about anything Avatar, because believe me, I know most everything, you can email me at MyersJoshP@aol:disqus .com

  • Jokkun

You’re completely wrong, MicheriaBoniswa. The cycle goes Water – Earth – Fire – Air. Wherever it starts, it continues from there. Roku mastered Fire from birth, THEN Air, then Water and last Earth. Aang mastered Air at birth, then Water, then Earth and last Fire. Korra mastered Water at birth, then Earth and Fire, and now she’s learning Air. There’s a CYCLE. And it’s NEVER broken. And Roku was a FULLY DEVELOPED master of all 4 elements at the time of his death (which was a few years BEFORE the Air Nomad massacre).

  • Jokkun

The 1st Question is one that a lot are asking and hopefully the new series will answer it. As for the Iroh question, I remember reading somewhere that he entered the Spirit Realm looking for his son out of grief. It was something he picked-up along his travels (not something known to only the Fire Nation as you put it). As for the last question, Aang WAS the last Airbender. There’s no secret colony of Airbenders lurking in some faraway mountain (and btw, the Southern Air Temple WASN’T the closest to the Fire Nation. The Western Temple was).

Though Aang was the last Airbender at the time, he wasn’t the last in history. His youngest son, Tenzin, and all 4 of Tenzin’s children are Airbenders [Reference: Legend of Korra]

  • Gaitkeeper18

I know , this post was made 8 months ago. I didn’t know much. But now I do …so I appreciate the info even though about 12 other people already told me.

  • AVATARexpert

Yes, Aang died at the age of 65. Tenzin is Aang’s son and not really Aang. Avater: The Last Airbender took place 75 years before The Legend of Korra and we do not yet know if Zuko died.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/MY43DXCEMTAJKB67GDAQLI4XRY Justin

I would venture a guess that to keep the “balance” some airbenders would be born somewhere, or some people would relearn airbending.  Remember: the legends say that people learned bending from their original spirit animals (Dragons = Fire, Badgermoles = Earth, etc).

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/MY43DXCEMTAJKB67GDAQLI4XRY Justin

    steampunk technology booooo

I want to know what Katara looks like underneath that Fire Nation dress!

  • Dragonjay

Alrite well I just wanted to say that your whole air bending temple thing and that Aang isn’t the only air bender is completely wrong. The fire nation went around the world looking for air benders. Then at the end of the series Aang is not dead so the cycle is not broken. It is clear that Aang and Katara could have had kids, which they did, and that they could have been air benders, then they could could have kids and so on.

  • Erik Escareno

Only when the avatar dies in the avatar state does the cycle break.

  • Lilyyouniskhan

Guess what. Korra new avatar!!! :DDD WOO THIS GIRL IS STRONG!! but i want aang and his team back! :(

  • Samuelevans

So did aang and kattora have a kid but if thay dide shoul he or she be the avatar

  • Samuelevans

Look I’m sorry it goes fire water earth an air long ago there was a avatar that was a fire lord but now a air bender

  • Boomtayboom

Lol aang has 3 kids with katara only 1 airbender

  • shaelina

if there is a non-bender and that person knows how to take peoples power and took the avatars power away would the avatars still have her /his power still or will it be gone forever?

  • GUEST

HOW AVATAR AANG DID HE DIE

  • Daria Serebrova

I get the first and second reason, but the third was a little confusing. But I enjoyed reading this anyways. :)

  • hotjosh

uncle Iroh never ventured into the spirit world, however he’s into that spirit stuff because hes part of the order of the white lotus. but your right he’s bad ass cause he’s uncle Iroh you learn that hes in touch with all the elemental forces when he tries to teach Zuko to redirect lightning after princess Azula shot him with it. Zuko even says ,”all this 4 elements talk sounds like avatar stuff.” direct qoute from the episode after “the chase”. the move he teaches Zuko he created by watching waterbenders. that’s why Uncle is the man

  • hotjosh

for the record the avatar cycle starts with fire, water, earth and air.  aang is already a master you get the tattoos after you master airbending

  • aang

So aang and cutara had a kid right

  • hotjosh

the new series “the legend of korra” starts out with her already having mastered fire water and earth bending. in this series we see what Aang would’ve had to have done to master air. korra ,from childhood, was shooting fire bending water and earth

  • hotjosh

sorry my bad i know that’s wrong

  • Asdf123

iroh is known as the dragon because he breathes fire out of his mouth

and the discussion of how aang isnt the last air bender and how if he dies the cycle of avatar would die because he isnt there to teach the new avatar air bending… umm r u retarded it’s called having kids…..

  • R4mii

iroh went looking for his son lu ten?

  • Sesshysdaughter

The airbenders bodies could have been burned to ashes and blown away. Even if Aang died, the bisons were the first airbenders and Korra, like toph with the badger moles and earth, could learn airbending from them. Oh and Korra can tap into the spirits of all avatars and they could help her.

  • Sesshysdaughter

Point made! The next avatar is born at the exact moment the current avatar dies. I.e. The moment Roku had died was when Aang was born. Thank you Asd123

  • Romantiik Demiise

Can someone tell me, how the hell Aang had any children. Pretty sure it is stated numerous times, that the Avatar was not allowed to have a family, being one of the disadvantages of being the Avatar, yet it is a price all avatar’s must pay…

Please tell me that this is answered somewhere because I cannot find it anywhere….

  • Ans

if you do some research you will find that aang and katara did get married and had airbender offspring and in legend of korra apparently she will meet one of the offspring. so the cycle will continue to have airbenders.

  • katara

    watch the legend of Korra

  • Me

I guess the Legend of Korra spoiled that last hypothesis. But good questions on the other topics. :)

  • justsaying

You forget that Avatar Aang is not infertile. Which means he will have kids and they will more than likely be born with the power to air bend. Aang will teach them to air bend and when he dies, they will STILL be able to air bend. You do not have to have two air bender parents to have an air bending child. So eventually the population CAN come back, and Aang could have been the last air bender. So the line of avatars wouldn’t have ended with him.

  • Joao_mjesus

You are all forgetting that Aang can have airbending Sons!Duhhh!

  • Bird-Fish

Well, we can disregard the ‘last airbender’ bit, seeing as he has an airbending child to pass on the legacy. That being said, regardless of whether any other air nomads survived, the real question is why sozin was idiotic enough to KILL the air nomads.  If he knew that the avatar was an air nomad, it would have made far more sense to capture the relatively untrained avatar as a child…if his intention was to kill him, the avatar would have then been born into the far more powerful and militaristic (though not on the level of the earth kingdom) water tribes. At this point, things likely would have gone poorly for him.  We’ve seen that it took another hundred years for the fire nation to make any headway, and in that time, a less merciful avatar would have been born and raised (an of course they could easily learn airbending from the past avatars).  Sorry for the long post ;P

  • Jonjon

Well aang and katara have three kids a waterbender a airbender and a non bender the airbender has 3 kid all of wich are airbenders

  • Guest

With Iroh, I’ve never really cared about that, it might be explained and even if it does I don’t think it’s really that much of a flaw. The mother is going to have a part in The Legend Of Korra because the kid asks what happened to Zuko’s mother. And as for the last bit, I think the other air temples were cleaned up and the fire nation don’t exactly care do they? And Aang isn’t the last air bender, he has kids.

  • Tova Weinberger

we see in the legend of korra that the airbending msater is aang’s son, so that explains that, but there are also plenty of bison.  Where did appa find a girlfriend?

  • KevinB

Aang will repopulate the world with airbenders with the use of one single move… The Air Hump.

  • BOB

The last unanswered question is easy (About who is next in the cycle when it reaches airbending atleast, no idea about if other airbenders survived). Aang is an airbender. Aang can have children. Therefore the children could also become airbenders.

  • imaB

-.- in the show he learns airbending through the monks. hes frozen, they all die therefore he is the last. In Avatar: the legend of korra, we learn he had an airbending child: Tenzin who ultimately is given the task to train the avatar. he also has 4 kids (3 of which can airbend- 1 is a newborn)

  • Guest

news flash. legend of korra. Aang’s son Tenzen teaches Korra airbending. so your wrong.

  • Qwerty

aang is the last airbender in”avatar the last airbender”, but in the next series “legends of korra” him and katara get married and has 3 sons. 1 of them is a airbender. he has children all of them r airbenders

  • B Couch

In the new legend of Korra series, Appa hs passed along with aunt, yet, Tenzin has a bison, how can this be if Appa was the last air bison, as indeed it was revealed that he was in the episode Appa’s Lost Days.?

  • Vash1456

Aang and Katara knocked the boots and spit out a few babies. Which then Aang would taught how to air bend so that when he dies and his kids have kids of there own They can teach the next avatar how to air bend (like how Tenzin is teaching Korra).

  • Ryan Eidson

Im sorry but the new avatar korra is taught by aangs son tezin so it was a duty of aang to create more air benders so to say and in the new series a long time after the war the nomads are not back so if they had gone they would have come back to the world. Finally there would not be any where for them to go unless they made a flying city which is highly un likely

  • Aaronmann613348

all of you people fighting over what element is first in the cycle are idiots, it is a cycle and by definition the beginning and end change depending on where you start, aang was born and airbender and moved through the cycle as if air was first, roku was born a firebender and moved through the cycle as if fire was first and korra was born a waterbender so she moved through the cycle as if water was first

  • Zadoc Paet

It’s said that Aang discovered a herd of sky bison in his adventures after the war.

  • Tteaster

    The show is amasone

  • guest

There is a new series of Avatar called the Legend of Korra. She is born in the water tribe and learns Air bending off Aangs son who is an air bender and has 3 children who are also air benders. That is how they get around the last air bender thing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000486493058 Khano Gordon

Here’s one thing. Watching Legend of Korra and then i see more sky bison. I go onto the website and it says that over the years during Aangs adventures he found a heard of roaming sky bison. AND NO ONE CARED TO SAY ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!

  • JustaFan

ummmmm what about Korra? Aang’s kids where airbenders and so where his grandkids. Oh and my unanswered question is about Korra : If Appa was a Male and the only flying bison left how did he have a baby? And that would make aang NOT the last airbender if he had airbender kids, so HA!

  • hidef

Um, he got married and made babies with his wife? Avatar Roku got married too, and his granddaughter was Fire Lord Ozai’s wife. Episode 6 of Book 3 tells the story of Avatar Roku’s life.

  • CommonSense

look. if aang wasn’t the last living airbender their series would not be called ‘avatar: the last airbender’ i don’t think that the story writers intended for anyone to go into any further detail suggesting that there would be more airbenders in hiding. they would have at least announced it in an interview or at least hinted it during the whole series and anyway aangs son and grandson and granddaughters are airbenders during the legend of korra. i don’t know about his other son or the new grandson baby though but they’re probably airbenders as well .

  • Ghie_ramirez

i want to know who is the mother and father of aang?

  • Shpuggy

Did the fire nation look for a water tribe avatar in case the airbending avatar had in fact died?

  • jayson

Is there and extension to air bending,, like blood bending is to water bending, and metal bending is an extension to earth bending. maybe i missed it but i don’t think there is one ?

  • Williamtishuk

You are completely wrong about the air nomads, a tiny bit of Iroh, and Zuko’s mom. See Zuko’s mom was banished because Ozai originally planned to kill him, but Azulan said to do something unthinkable to Zuko.  So Zuko’s mom was banished.  As for the air Nomads, Fire Lord Sozin, who began the war,  wanted to wipe out the Air nomads so that the Avatar cant stop them, but Aang ran away some time before that, so Aang is the last airbender.  All of the air temples have signs of battle look at the Western air temple it has a lot of signs. You are right about saying if aang died during the seriez then the avatar cycle would be broken when it gets to air, because there aren’t any more airbenders to take over.. depending on if Appa died, the next avatar may or may not learn airbending because bisons were the original airbenders.     now onto iroh,  he is called the dragon of the west for two reasons, one he can “breath” fire as show in Winter solstice part one and Cross road of destiny, two he is believed to have slain the last dragons, but actually didnt. I think thats it.

  • Colbycted

ree-watch episode 3 and the whole series before u say that Aang isn’t the last airbender

  • Kylej73

aang grows up and has children one of which is an airbender, (tenzin) and he teaches the new avatar (korra) how to air bend

  • Thedeadliestsyn

Love the first two questions, but the last one is kinda answered in Legend of (Some spoilers) Ang was still considered to be the last air bender of his kind, but his and Katara’s son, Tenzin ends up being an airbender as well as his three kids. And in the show it is even quoted by the police chief ” ..you are the last airbenders…”.

  • Rainbowxeclipsez

Actually…. ur last UNANSWERED QUESTION is already answered..

When the Avatar: legend of Korra was released, it gave answer to ur question reagarding the notion that NO ONE might be able to teach the NEXT AVATAR (by the name of Korra) Airbending if Aang may die.of course… DESTINY already knew that Aang wouldn’t die :)so u dont have to worry about it :D

  • Mortie6b

No, Aang was The last airbender, he got kids with Katara and one of them is a airbender and his kids are airbenders too, and They say that it is The last airbending family.

  • Mortie6b

You are wrong. Aang was The last airbender, because there is a sequel : the legend of Korra, the new avatar. Aang has died. But he got kids with Ktara one of them is Tenzen, an airbender, he got kids too (3) and they all are airbenders, they are the only airbenders on the planet. Catch up men.

  • Evelina

First Question is a mystery, but in The Legend of Korra Katara and Jinora talks about Zuko’s mother.
Second Question does not interest me that much.
Much last question is easy. Avatar Aang got a son named Tenzin, who is a airbendermaster and he got four children with a non-bender named Pema. And all these four children, Jinora, Ikki, Meelo and Rohan. Two girls and two boys. If they’re getting children with more non-benders, who is airbenders too, then the airbenders will become more and more. Problem solved. Go watch The Legend of Korra and you’ll get more answers ;)

You forgot “what happened to Jet” ! Pretty big cliffhanger there!

    cloud bending

  • http://www.facebook.com/daniel.macy.5 Daniel Macy

Yeah, I think that Aang was the last air bender. Because he learned of it before getting frozen. And in order to teach the next avatar he would have had to have a child that was an air bender, which he did (Tenzin). However, had that not happened, then the next avatar would have learned air bending since they are so in sync with the spirit world. Somehow, like the lion turtle, they would have had the chance to learn air. And as for the cycle when it eventually got to air, some baby, somewhere, would have been born with the ability. That is my saying. And I don’t recall when Iroh goes into the spirit world, when was that?

  • Neljan

“then if Aang really is the last airbender, the Avatar cycle breaks with his death. The next Avatar would have no one to learn airbending from.”

I just would like to clear things out, the Avatar cycle will just break once an avatar will be killed while he’s in Avatar state. It’s also clear that the writer meant him to be the last airbender only in his time, but then I just can’t latch on to you’re idea between asking if he really is the last airbender and the cycle breaks, they just don’t connect. It just doesn’t answer if he really is the last airbender.

    No hard feelings. :)

  • elRufus

    Fart Bending

  • http://www.facebook.com/mustafa.camara.5 Mustafa Camara

aang is the last air bender and the new avatar korra do have a teacher because aang had a air bending son so the air bending family go on so thats how the new avatar learns air bending

  • Southern Water Tribe

There is :), Breath Bending, The Air Nomads have the ability to take your breath away or enclose you with a barrier that does not contain air. Unfortunately they never applied it in the story :D

  • http://www.facebook.com/m00nzend Δευτ.στείλετεθημωνιά συλλαμβάν

Why does Tenzin have blue arrow on his head when his not the successor of the avatar? :)

  • djkash

azula was put into a mental facility near the fire nation capital after zuko was crowned fire lord she is under 24/7 watch

  • Ash

Even though they didn’t have theh air ships back then there were still ways to get to temples, even difficult hidden ones like the Western Air Temple even though it’s like built on the underside of a cliff they could still use things like ropes to swing to it and climb down the rocks and such and in the Southern Air Temple there were more air bender bodies than fire bender bodies as we saw when they opened that door in the temple (i felt so bad when Aang saw his old teacher DX)

And if Aang died it wouldn’t stop the reincarnation of teh Avatar because 1) HIM AND KATARA WILL HAVE LITTLE AIR BENDER BABIES!!! <3 and 2) The Avatar will reincarnate in another race.
Also Iroh is called a draagon beacause he can breath fire out of his mouth ^____^

  • Kae kae

Aang and katara end up getting married and having kids that are airbenders so the next avatar (Korra) actually does have someone to learn from and the avatar cycle will continue

  • just saying

And what about the legend of kora?? And had intercourse with katara and some airbender were born

  • http://www.facebook.com/anthony.saw.7545 Anthony Saw

look aang has have 3 children 1 is a air nomad 1 is a water bender and the other is a non bender aang air bender son name is tenzin and tenzin have 4 children . these 4 are all air bender and tenzin will teach the other avatar (after aang) air bending

  • http://www.facebook.com/vici.doore Vici Doore

I personally am really confounded by the timeline of the war and the number of generations that filled it. Sozin dies at age 102 twenty years after the war begins, and his son Azulon ascends the thrown at age 20. So… an 82 year old had a kid? Not impossible, as far as guys go, but the Fire Lady on the other hand had to be beyond breeding at that point. Even if she wasn’t… still, just ew. Then Azulon rules for 75 years, and dies at age 95. Ozai ascends the thrown, dunno how old but with an 11 year old son (Zuko). Iroh was born when Azulon was 35, and at age 65 the portly man is clearly MUCH older than his younger brother… so let’s say Ozai was 35 years old at the end of the war, meaning he had Zuko at about 24-ish. First kid at 80; first kid at 35, second kid at ~65; first kid at ~24, second kid at ~26. Am I the only one that sees the weirdness in this? I think it would have made a bit more sense if they threw another generation in there, and evened it all out a bit… But, that may just be me. Whatever.

  • lepine

.. you didnt read the hole thing did you he noted that the original was not called the last air bender..it was called the legend of aang Americans changed the name.. because there stupid and gotta fk up everything just like they fked up the movie.. they didnt even say his name right how the hell do you mess that up..

  • Jenny

When airbenders master airbending, are the tattoos inked on by another monk or do they appear?

  • stupidpeoplemakemesad

    Nicely answered…however….
Iroh is called “The Dragon of the West” because of his claim that he conquered the last dragon- anyone who conquered a dragon earned the title “Dragon”. (Episode 13, Book 3). He isn’t called a dragon just because he can breathe fire.
Aang is the last HUMAN airbender, technically not the last if you count Appa. It was stated that some airbenders escaped the genocide, however, they too were decimated by the fire nation’s tactics of luring them into traps and so on and so forth. Aang repopulates his race with his son Tenzin (KATAANG FOR THE WIN) and Tenzin has three airbenders later on (Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo). His wife Pema just gave birth to their fourth child Rohan, but it is unknown if he is an airbender.

  • Mia

why is the movie’s concept far from the Avatar: Legend of Aang???
and why is that, every time something part of the anime/cartoon ( Legend of Aang) is shown in the movie…. 5 or few mins later that is not part of the cartoon/anime anymore???…

  • Mia

    ….
actually, he’s not the last airbender, he had a son or some kids w/ katara… then he had ( more or less ) 5 granddaughters and 1 or 2 grandsons….
to make the long story short:)))
Just watch Avatar : Legend of Korra…
so that you can also believe me…

  • Mia

    well actually …
that is a combination of Water bending and Airbending

  • Mia

    is that how it happened??…
because if i remembered it correctly….
they first all study Air, then Water, then Earth, then Fire….
but if one element is already born with one of the element,
then, they are still going to study but not all over again and not from the very start…
and this cycle is just like…
when the Earth Avatar (Avatar Kyoshi) died, the next avatar was a Firbender and it was Avatar Roku…. then when he died it was an Air nomad ( and it was Aang…) …
and so the cycle continues and repeats its self…
    and 2nd Example :
is on why Jeong Jeong can’t teach Aang Firebening because he haven’t learned all the other element… (and also that’s why the cartoon/series was arranged that way …)
because Aang/(all)The Avatar has to learned them step-by-step
    not by starting from air/water/earth/fire….
he need to learn them all STEP-BY-STEP…
    (* ps.
Please correct me if I’m Wrong….
    thanks!! :) :D *).

but that is a possibilty but than again how do u think they got their bending in the first place if the last air bender died dont u think that it is a wild possibilty that as for the begining of the benders was that the spirit world would just try an create a new air bender.
    food for thought

  • http://www.facebook.com/fred.galvin.31 Fred Galvin

as it showed in the show its not possible to fully remove all their bending it was simpally an ability through blood bending so once you understand this than you have the tools to overcome the effects of the bending issue as korra did in the show

  • http://www.facebook.com/fred.galvin.31 Fred Galvin

well to the fact of some 1 living forever dont you think that if some 1 could every 1 in the world would want to get the secret to the imortality of that person so all the show would of been named if that were the issue is avatar; world at war

  • http://www.facebook.com/fred.galvin.31 Fred Galvin

obviesally not because if they were than they would know that you dont mess with some ones sky bison

  • jorocks30

Aang would repopulate the world with air benders if he marries Katara, then Katara and Aang would repopulate the world with maybe water and air bender babies. Then they would etheir be water benders or air benders or both.

  • jorocks30

Air benders get their arrow when they have mastered air bending

  • Mariah

It was you who didn’t read the article fully. He noted that the name was changed when it was released outside of America. It’s an american show, “The Last Airbender” is the original name. I don’t know what your problem with Americans is, but you have to realize that the US has both good and bad, like any other country. Saying Americans are “stupid” is unproductive and inaccurate.

  • FollowFreeman2308

Actually, Americans didn’t fuck up the movie, M. Night Shyamalan did. IT WAS ONE PERSON! Also Avatar is an AMERICAN MADE SHOW YOU DUMBASS! So, that being said the Legend of Aang was called THE LEGEND OF AANG BECAUSE IT WAS ABOUT HIM BEING THE LAST AIRBENDER AND ALSO AVATAR DEFEATING THE FIRE NATION AND BRINGING BALANCE TO THE WORLD. Holy shit how can you be that naive.

  • FollowFreeman2308

All the Airbenders were killed off, sorry to say, there was no survivors. Interesting to plot, but no. If you remember from majority of the Firebenders they could project flame from there feet and fists making it so they could be like a jet and fly and be able to get to the Air temples without airships. With that being said, they also killed off the Airbenders during the comet, Sozin’s comet.

  • Steph

Well, the follow up manga STILL doesn’t tell you where Zuko’s mother is, however Katara hints that she was found in the first episode of The Legend of Korra. I’d LOVE to know what Iroh did in the spirit world (I have a feeling the spirits loved him, which couldn’t?) And he was really only the last Air bender at the time, until he and Katara started giving everybody the oogies and doing a little bit of private bending. And then there was baby Tenzin c:

  • the truth

all i know is one thing the series rocked! and the real movie sucked.

  • AlissaG

With the thing about Aang being the last air bender he is obviously going to hav kids and one of then is bound to be an air bender. Therefore he will no longer be the last air bender. In the legend of Korra, Aang’s son (I can’t remember his name) teaches Korra airbending so Aang IS the last air bender. Until he has his son that is.

  • jagmaster0802

I know aang has kids but in the movie and the series aang says that everyone told him HE CAN’T HAVE A FAMILY but roku and anng both have wives (it doesn’t sy roku had kids) and also in one of the episodes roku and gyatso ARE THE SAME AGE so how is gyatso aangs teacher if he isn’t near death.Sorry for the long post it is just that important information THAT NO ONE THOUGHT OF THESE INFORMATION OR QUESTIONS!!!!

  • jagmaster0802

my bad i put the wrong email address for jagmaster0802

  • jagmaster0802

My bad it said the avatar can’t have kids.

  • Pepito

Aang was born as an airbander, thus he has got the DNA of one. So that is why he could have and airbender as a son. Their another son Boomi is non bender because Kataras father was non bender and maybe one of Aangs parents was as well (not everyone in Air Temple had to be air bender). And how could Roku be friends with monk Giatsu? Well they could be the same age, Roku didn’t look like he was about to die from an old age when the volcano killed him, and few years later was monk Giatsu teacher of Aang, that makes sense, that he was still alive :D.

  • Ralace

My million dollar question remains… Why couldnt aang just have bloodbended Ozai, isntead of learning the four elements?

  • C Bray

#3: the firebenders wanted 2 end the cycle! hey killed “all” airbenders to stop any potential resistance from the other nations. without the avatar then theres no way the fire nation could lose. also im not saying therea no airbenders left because they couldve escaped but 4 the sake of the show lets just say there arent. so aang couldve just found people who could learn airbending taught
them so the cycle wouldnt end. the fire nation new that the next avatar was an airbending based on the cycle. im not a huge fan of the show but im a fan nontheless. u need 2 think better b4 posting “unanswered” questions. the 2nd “unanswered” question i thought i heard some1 said she died or was killed but i dont really rememeber.

  • JKRIEL

toph says the bagermo(i dont know the exact spelling) are the 1st earth benders,, zuko says the dragons are the 1st fire benden, aang says the flying bisons are the 1st airbenders so APPA can teach the other people to repopulate the airbenders….

  • Artemis

Actually, it I think it does work like a cycle. The Avatar starts with their natural element, and continues to learn the others from their. I don’t know if you’ve seen Legend of Korra, but when it begins, she is finishing firebending, and as it progresses she moves onto airbending. If what you’re saying was true, she would have started with air, but since the series shows her already knowing water, earth, and fire prior to even starting airbending, she obviously didn’t.

Some things to note on Zuko’s mother Ursa. The last night he see’s his mother, His Mother just learned of Lu Tin’s Death. Meaning the blood line would not continue had it been left to Iroh. Ozai ask’s his father Azulon to pass the power to him, he even shows off Azula’s (named after Azulon) skills and power. Furious with this proposal, Azulon demands Ozai to kill his son, so he can feel the loss of a Son just as Iroh had. Later that night Azula rush’s into Zuko’s room, (she stayed behind and listens to her father and Azulon speak) she then starts taunting him saying “Dad’s going to kill you, Really, He Is.” Then Ursa come’s in, she demands to know what’s going on.
Azula keeps mentioning threw out the episode{zuko alone}, or hinting, Wouldn’t it be great if dad was the fire lord…. or how Iroh is a coward and a traitor for not staying in Ba Sing Se. Which brings me to the conclusion Azula has been working with her father at a young age to make him fire lord.
Wouldn’t it be possible that when Ursa Grabbed Azula by the hand and said “we are going to have a long talk young lady!” that perhaps it all came out? the whole plan, and that’s when she stepped in to save Zuko? Ursa knew something was up…

For those of you who do not know, I just learned they are making a book or manga series called the search, it will consist of 3 books, coming out in march on zuko releasing his sister from a ‘asylum’ of some sort and finding their mother.

    Appa is an airbender too

I actually a fagree with a lot that you have written, It makes sense to me even if it doesn’t make sense to others. All I wanted to know is who tells the Avatar he is the Avatar? I know the monks told Aang and it looked like some sort of priests told Roku but is that how it happened for all of the Avatars?
Also even thigh this doesn’t totally fit I. With this I just want to say that I didn’t like that new series they put out about the new Avatar after Aang, I didn’t find it that good and I couldn’t watch more than a few episodes. Even thigh I would have loved to have found out more about what happened to everyone after the war, I think it would have been better to just to keep it where it left off. The series was perfect the way it was and trying to go On with it like they did I found was a little much. But that is just my opinion…

So, let’s get this straight: this is a world where a HERD OF GIANT FLYING BISON can go 100 years without being found, and people are doubting that a group of nomads whose powers include silent movement, flight, and superspeed, and whose philosophy advocates adapting to problems, somehow managed not to go entirely extinct?

  • Williamtishuk

Im not sure what you are trying to say. In the Episode of the Firebending masters they go through the creatures that taught the bending. firebending was taught by the dragons, airbending the flying bisons, earthbending bader moles, and waterbending the moon.

Hi! I see the discution take place a long time ago. I have some doubts about the new series, the Legend of Korra. First, the lightening is supouse to be an hability of soul calm and resolution that’s why Zuko can’t do it, how ever here we see a lot of fire benders who arent that good, make it; the same whit the police force and metal bending.

About Korra, she has troubles in the manage of air bending and to conect whit the spirit word; but she’s supouse to have trouble whit the oposite element that is FIRE, instead she manage its as a child….

I found the legend of korra very very disturbant.

The last thing that bothers my is the Republic city, they have poor people bad, gangs and all this things Aang cant stand because of his raising, you see him mention his proublems whit this in ba sing se…

If someone can ingnore my discuting english and help me iluminate my doubts it would be great. Thanks

Aang is called the last air bender because the fire nation wiped away every other air bender, and the world believed he had died with them, so when they find them and the world becomes aware of his existence again, he’s the only one left with that ability. Because he’s the only air bander that didn’t get killed by the fire nation, ergo he’s the last one left

  • Robert Demaree

What did Aang do between the end of the series and his death? Just live a normal life?

  • DislodgedFir853

If you watched the series and read the comics you would see that Aang is the last airbender. In one of the comics, Team Avatar went to a vilage and at a market, Aang spotted an airbender item so Aang questioned about it. He gets information that leads to some nearby mountains that Aang strongly believes that there are some living airbenders around that got away. At night, Aang sneaks out to go to the mountains to see if there are any living nomads there but finds out he was fooled by the Admiral Zhao that set up the same trap he used to lure all off the remaining air nomads to the mountains so that he can kill the one that escaped the fire nation. So even if som of the air nomads got away, they were tricked and killed by Zhao’s trap in the mountains. Also, I read a comment on youtube saying that Aang’s time in the iceburg had nothing to do with his death. They said that he passes away naturally in his sleep. But I don’t know. He could have lost the enerrgy he had left to keep him going and passed awaty in his sleep. Im gonna go look for the video to see where he got this information from.

  • DislodgedFir853

He Avatar cycle would’t have broke when he died because of his relationship with Katara. Im guessing that he wanted to have children so that whe can teach them airbending so when he is gone, the next Avatar would have a teacher so that the Avatar cycle will continue to exist. His ladt child was an airbender so that was what Aang wanted annd spent tome training Tenzinto be an airbender and maybe gotten carried away to have another child or something.

  • Rajim

^ That needs to be seen by everyone around here. And who knows, the unknown branch of Airbending might just be ninjutsu and invisibility techniques.

  • zekaos air bender

The airnomad history states that once an airbender fully masters airbending he aquires the arrows on his body showing he has learned the ways of the bison, so if all nomads died also including the bison ,Ang already had mastered every airbending technique.

    1. You get to find out what happen to Zukos mother in The Search part 1
    2. Iroh has entered the Spirit world
    3. FireLoard Sozan whipped out the air nomads

  • Eve

I’m gonna poke some holes in your logic about Aang not being the last airbender. Yes, I know that Appa is an airbender also, but I do believe that they meant human airbenders. Also, Aang can just have kids to continue the Avatar cycle of Air. Then of course is the fact about airbenders escaping the first attack. Yes, I bet some did escape, but they cleared that up in the graphic novel, Avatar The Last Airbender: The Lost Adventures. In one of the adventures it describes how they set traps for the other airbenders and then taking them out also. And just so you know, there are only 4 temples, or at least there are when the war is going on. In The Legend of Korra, which takes place exactly 70 years after the war ends, it says that Aang built a 5th temple near the center of the world, because that’s where Republic City is.

  • jason

If aang didnt have kids the cycle would be broken because the next avatar that would be born of the air nomads, would’nt be able. because their all dead

  • mars211

Irohs nickname “the Dragon of the West” is given to him because he’s the only character who is known for breathing fire… later on we learn that Ozai breaths fire too but still

  • TheNewAvatar

they appear…. because when theyy were painted, airbend Avatar’s
can’t impossible let the Arrow shine… Also Tenzin (Aang’s zon) has an Arrow and there wasn’t any other monk

  • TheNewAvatar

In the second season of The Legend Of Korra, they let us show what it is

  • SteveoG

Well In The New Avatar Show It Says That They Found A Herd Of Sky Bison So Why Not A Civilization Of Air Nomads You Have To Think About Things Around The Show Not Just In It And Yes It Is Called The Last Airbender But The Show Ended Before They Could Answer The Question Is There Still Air Nomads Left And Now They Can Answer That With The New Avatar Show And Make The New Show Longer And More Interesting Or With The Comic Books Which Ever One

  • SteveoG

By The Way Not All Air Nomads Are Born Air Benders It Is An Art Of Piece Of Mind And Spiritual Enlightenment I Mean I Could Become A Guru Right Now If I Wanted To And So Could Other People In The Avatar Universe

  • SteveoG

Thanks For Doing That For Me Because I Would Go All Out On That Guy If You Hadn’t Already

  • SteveoG

I Know Fire Bending Is Lightning

  • SteveoG

The Cycle Of The Avatar Only ends If The Avatar Is Killed In The Avatar State But If He Is Just Killed Without Being I The avatar State He Will Be Reincarnated To The Next Nation In The Cycle

  • SteveoG

Aang Was Still There To Teach Tenzin Before he Aang Died He Probably Tattooed The Arrows On Him

  • SteveoG

And The Cycle Would Just Skip Over Air And Straight BAck to Water. So It Would Go Water Earth Fire Water Or When The Next Avatar Comes She Could Give The Power Of Air bending To And Air Nomad And Continue The Cycle That Way

  • http://www.facebook.com/jgnixdorf John Nixdorf

The avatar cycle is only broken if there’s no airbenders when it is again time for an airbender to be born. After Aang’s death, it’s time for a waterbender (Korra), followed by an earthbender, followed by a firebender. If at that time there were no other airbenders, then the avatar cycle would be broken.

However, Aang had an airbender child, Tenzin, who has three airbending children, and that’s just by the time of Korra. If Korra lives for 80 years, that’s enough time for easily 3 more generations of airbenders. And 3 more generations during the earthbender, and 3 more generations during the firebender. 9 generations of reproducing airbenders. If each generation of airbender parents 3 airbender children, then that’s 81 airbenders by the time the earth nation avatar comes around. And 2,187 airbenders by the time the fire nation avatar comes around. When its time again for an air nation avatar, there will be over 59,000 airbenders having kids. So the cycle will very likely continue.

  • jlu650

Aang could have very well been the last airbender at the time of the
series. We later learn in the squeal, Legend of Korra, that Aang and
Katara had Tenzin, who was born an airbender (they also have two other
children but I don’t think they ever mention if they are water or air
benders or if they are even benders at all). Tenzin married a
non-bender, but has at least three children (two daughters and a son)
who are airbenders like him. He also has a forth child (a son) at the
end of the first season, which Katara said she thought would be an
airbender too. Also, children can be benders even if their both parents
are not, so it might be possible that Katara and Aang had more
Grandchildren who were airbenders from either or both of their other two
kids. Of course, there’s no way of knowing this during the first
series, but it makes more sense now. And it is possible that there were
more airbenders during the original series, but the show’s logic doesn’t
really depend on it. The only way that would be a problem is if Aang
and Katara didn’t have any airbending children.

The mOvie: Avatar the Legend of Aang was turned to call The last Airbender it is because when aang ran away from the air nomads then the Fire nation knew that the Avatar will be born in the Air Nomads they declared a war and they killed all the Airbenders and only aang survived because he ran away from his nomad.

WHY IS HE CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????? I LOVE YOU AVATAR AANG!! YOU ARE MINE!!!!!!!!!

  • Eferanl

old story here. I just watched book 2 chapter 10 & 11, There were sand bender?… They controlled sand and *air*. I thought this was rather odd Since you are lead to believe that only 1 person knows air bending. Even though in times of war some people simply move to a more stable location until the war ends. These sand benders could just be decedents of air benders who learned how to control sand as well but at a cost of greater air bending. In book 2 you get to see sand benders blowing air into sails of ships that use sand as water.

  • Seth

But in the legend of Korra, they end with water. they just end with the current character’s element. it would a bad intro if you showed the main character in the middle.

  • orangeturkey

If the Avatar is the only one who can master all four elements couldn’t there be other people who can master more than one element?
