You Won’t Believe What Built This Underwater Crop Circle

This is an underwater structure built about 80 feet underwater off the coast of the southern Japanese island of Anami Oshima. Considering no one had ever encountered anything like it, diver and underwater photographer Yoji Ookata was at a loss to explain what had built the circular, repeating, and clearly geometric structure. The architects of this feat of underwater engineering were discovered by Japanese broadcaster NHK, and the answer to what built the six and a half foot wide structure is at once mundane and really impressive.

The builder, it turns out, was a single ordinary — but exceptionally hard-working – pufferfish.

A film crew from NHK staked out this bizarre creation only to find that the entire structure was carved out by a single male pufferfish, tirelessly swinging his fin in the sand to create the grooves and ridges of the structure, which is many times the size of his own body. They also found that beyond just carving out the repeating shapes, he was also decorating the structure as he built it, peppering it with small stones and seashells.

Why would a pufferfish go through with all this trouble, you ask? Well, for the same, arguably one and only reason males of any species do anything ever — to attract a mate.

The structure, as striking and alien as it may look, especially beneath the surface of the waves, is actually a stunningly pragmatic one, acting as both love nest and nursery for the pufferfish. Females are drawn to the structures, where they mate with the males and leave their fertilized eggs behind. That’s when it becomes clear that those ridges aren’t just for beautifying the neighborhood. They serve as buffers to the ocean currents, making sure the newly fertilized eggs stay in one place. Researchers hypothesize that the shells the puffer brings to the structure may also be more than decorative, and could provide nutrition for the developing eggs.

So that’s your “nature is pretty surprising and beautiful sometimes” reminder of the day. Oh, and here’s that shot of the pufferfish nest at night, because, man, we can’t finish this without showing it to you.

I have been using Geekosystem for years now and I would like to make known some gripes I have with the website. I know this won’t make any difference in the quality of the site but I feel I need to get it off my chest.

1: Even though Geekosystem is a relatively small website, when comments are posted on articles NO ONE from geekosystem ever responds. How do you guys expect to build a good community if you won’t even talk to your users.

2: Far too many of your headlines and infact, entire articles are sensationalist tripe these days. Articles on here never contain any objectivity whatsoever and there is just a whole lot of shoddy journalism on the site.

3: A large amount of your content, too much in my opinion, comes from reddit. I mean at this stage you may as well change the name of the site to “VIa Reddit”. Reddit has millions upon millions of users, it’s almost guaranteed that when you copy and paste some reddit thread onto your website, it has already been seen by most of the people who use your site.

4: The hug ads. For example the World of Worldcraft ad you have on the site right now. I can understand using ads of course, they bring money, money used to run the site. But surely they can be better done than taking up a huge border of the page with the actually website in the center. It just makes it seem like money is your primary goal over giving people informative articles.

5: Even after all these years, your website is still slow as hell. You should really get that sorted.

I agree with you on some points, Brian. Or ‘Bri-Bri’ if I may. I agree the ads and that horrible pop-up thing at the bottom that sometimes crashes the site for me is sucky. And I also would like to see some more engagement in the comments from the site’s owners/authors/adventurers extraordinaire. But maybe they are busy being on reddit. Which brings me to what is really my only point: reddit is here. It’s mainstream, and for good reason. It is a great place to get some cutting edge stories. And not everyone can access it at work, so I appreciate the Geekosystem treatment in adding some content from it. If everything was from reddit, then I would have issue with it. But as it is, there is still content referenced from other sources. Which brings me to what is really my only other point: I appreciate the non-objectivity in the writing. It was one of the things that endeared me to the site from the beginning. The authors speak in a language I appreciate, and doesn’t try to present stories in a pseudo-objective manner, like most major news outlets. My opinion is this: I know you have a subjective view of this news story…you know you have a subjective view…why not just give the facts and then blatantly give your subjective view in a humorous manner? Hopefully in the end, we have covered the facts and had a good laugh at the reality that no matter what language you speak, there will always be subjectivity when communicating anything between two humans.

And the site is slow. That’s true. Probably from the ads hugging the crap out of the articles.

I’m pretty sure this was done by a little mermaid.

Dude look at the forming of the sand closely… its not a perfect formation by any means… could very well have been done by a puffer fish. instead of acting like that why dont you research and see if this behavior has been recorded and seen before from a puffer fish. Studies are only recently finding out that animals are much more intelligent than we ever thought before.
