Verizon Announces 4G LTE Network, Goes Live December 5

Verizon has announced that their 4G LTE network, which they’re claiming is ten times faster than 3G, will become available this Sunday, December 5, starting in 38 markets and in over 60 major airports.

Verizon plans that their 4G LTE network will cover over 110 million people by the end of the year, which is fairly soon, and that they’ll achieve nationwide coverage by 2013. To check which areas are covered by the new network, head on over to Verizon’s fancy coverage checker. Along with a faster network, Verizon is rolling out two USB modems as well: The LG VL600 and the Pantech UML290.

As for the pricing: $50 a month for 5GB of data, or $80 a month for 10GB of data, both with a $10 per GB overage fee, while both modems will be available for $99.99 after a $50 rebate with a new two-year agreement.

    This is gonna be very interesting — to see how the rollout goes and how the market welcomes this new service. They’re going up against Sprint’s 4G, and Sprint-owned Clearwire’s 4G offerings through the “Clear” brand.

    This is gonna be the war of the 4G – WiMax vs LTE. Wimax has big name supporters like Intel, Google, and Time Warner. I’ve been placing my bets on Clearwire recently, simply because of the backing, and the already established market. Also, Sprint kind of relies on their 4G cause they don’t really have much else going for them.
