21 Weird Names For Groups of Animals

When it comes to collective nouns regarding groups of animals, you know the standard ones. Wolves run in a pack, fish in a school, geese in a flock, cows in a herd, etc. In fact, you probably know some of the weirder ones too, like whales in a pod or locusts in a plague. It doesn’t stop there though, as there are tons of really, really bizarre collective nouns for animals that it’s hard to believe anyone actually uses. Whether they’re used or not, they’re certainly good for a laugh and maybe a really good pun somewhere down the line. We’ve collected a bunch of the best for your pleasure and enlightenment.

  • A shrewdness of apes
  • A sloth of bears
  • A clowder, or a pounce of cats
  • A gang of elk
  • A business of ferrets or flies
  • A tower of giraffes
  • A bloat of hippos
  • A leap o’ leopards
  • A prickle of porcupines
  • A streak of tigers
  • A stand of flamingos
  • A deceit of lapwings
  • A parliment of owls
  • An ostentation of peacocks
  • A mustering of storks
  • An army of frogs or caterpillars
  • An intrusion of cockroaches (I could not agree more)
  • A smack of jellyfish
  • A cete of badgers
  • A romp of otters
  • A wisp of snipe

Some of them may sound ridiculous, but they’re all from the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center, as reliable of a resource as we could find on the subject. Check out the rest of their list here.

I wonder too, about who has the naming power! Imagine this: “A skulk of foxes”.

Yeah, we had the same question. The hardest part of researching this post was trying to find a source that seemed to have some semblance of credibility. The Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center has .gov in the url, so that’s why I used it. Seemed to be about as legit as the sources got, haha
