Allow Us to Explain: Why the Movie Green Lantern Is White

Let’s face it: we’re probably delivering a spiritual-minded homily to the large vocal ensemble here, but it has been brought to our attention that there may be a lot of people out there who saw the trailer for Green Lantern and are upset and confused about the fact that he’s being portrayed by a white actor.  Maybe you’re one of them. Maybe you’re not, but you know someone who is. This post is for you.

In A Nutshell

There have been a number of different men who have been the Green Lantern over time. But in the comics world, the accepted “original” Green Lantern is a guy named Hal Jordan, a white fighter pilot.  Created int the ’50s, he’s canonically a founding member of the Justice League, and it’s usually his absences that allow writers to bring another human Lantern (Like John Stewart, his first replacement) to the fore.

John Stewart is a retired black marine who was already in the Lantern Corps when he was promoted to Green Lantern of Earth in the 80′s when Hal Jordan quit for a while. You might be familiar with him because he was the Green Lantern that the makers of Justice League chose to feature in their cartoon series, to keep the League from being lily white (with one green dude).  It would be mostly unfair to call his character token, though.  Characterization was excellent all around in the series.  Plus, interracial dating!

This makes him the most visible Green Lantern outside of comic books… uh… ever.  Pretty much.  So we don’t blame you!  We’re big fans of the Justice League cartoon, and therefore of John Stewart, but in comics canon he’s unfortunately a back up Lantern.

Not In a Nutshell

The first Green Lantern was Alan Scott, who wore a damaged ring without ever knowing about the extraterrestrial space police who had created it.

The second Green Lantern was Hal Jordan.  He was a founding member of the Justice League and has been the most honored (and reviled, during a serious bout of villainy) Green Lantern born on Earth.

John Stewart was promoted to Green Lantern of Earth when Hal Jordan quit.

Guy Gardner was an emotionally unstable jerk who had to be coldcocked by Batman a few times.

Kyle Rayner was chosen to be a Green Lantern because his experience with fear would allow him to resist the entity Parallax (which, by the way, is going to appear in the movie).

PS: We’re not going to suggest that DC would never (intentionally or unintentionally) white-wash a character.  We’re just going to say that this isn’t an example of it.

PPS: John Stewart is likely to appear in cameo.

Boo. John Stewart is the people’s champ and the people’s choice.

  • kylemac

    Kinowolf,

I think you accidentally wrote “people” instead of “my” – not all people prefer the same GL. I prefer Rayner (weird, I know). That’s my champ and choice for GL, but I’m not so arrogant as to call it the “people’s” choice.

Kinowolf. Um sadly, your wrong. In my opinion, Hal Jordan will always be the original and the best. Don’t get me wrong, I do love John Stewart, but the origin story of the Green Lanterns is that of Hal Jordan.

What’s sad is that I’m right:

There’s an entire generation that grew up on GL John Stewart and would love to see him, but unfortunately there’s an older guard with… reservations.

Hal Jordan is of course the only choice here. Just had to be Hal. Think this movie may be a flop anyway, but if they didn’t use Hal Jordan it would have no doubt bombed. Thats 100% fact. The movie would have been an outcast among fan boys, which are the ones who will push the first weekend grosses and decide if the movie is a hit or not. I’m in my mid-30′s and I number a ton of people who are interested in this film, but none of them would be if they didn’t do it right and the start of doing it right is to have Hal Jordan as earths first Green Lantern.

Thank you so very much for posting this. Whenever I’ve tried to explain this to friends, they laughed or zoned out, saying that if Hal was at all interesting, he would have been the one in the show. Pointing out the conversion to Parallax and grafting to the Spectre didn’t do much for my case. From now on, I’m just gonna direct them here. I’ve always loved Hal, even though I wasn’t around to see his original series in any way, and I was incredibly happy when he and the corps were revived.

Although, being younger than twenty, it could also be a little bit of rebellion toward the masses who only know John.

This is all complete and udder bogusness come on now. Who is alive to known the Previous green latern characters except for the creators. Everyone in the world knows john stewart loves john stewart, and would really have liked to see john stuart portrayed in this pic. Kinwolf im with you on this one. How many movies came out that were actually the sequel and then a prequel was made. How many black super heroes are there really? So john stewart couldnt get his original shine and then they come out with a green latern origins or something. o yea this movie is goin to b a bust because its showing some more true colors of how the brother is always opressed

YOU ARE ALL WRONG THE FIRST EVER HUMAN EARTH GREEN LANTERN WAS ALLEN SCOTT U IDIOTS ARE DUMB IT WAS NOT HAL JORDAN THE FACT IS THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE USED JOHN STEWART BECAUSE HE WAS THE BEST LANTERN ALLEN SCOTT WAS THE FIRST EVERY GL NOT HAL JORDAN

  • Justin

I disagree, I grew up with GL John Stewart and he has always been my GL hero. I however do have to agree with them Kinowolf, you cannot be arrogant like that and think that your opinion is the one of the people. I for one have not watched the movie yet because I honestly did not know Stewart was not the original GL, but now that I do I think I may give it a shot. I was simply pissed that they made the GL white and did not keep the new generations hero how he was supposed to be. With this new info though I will see how it goes.
