Whether or not you enjoy professional sports, or live in the United States and actually care about the sport the rest of the world incites riots over, over the weekend, the Women’s World Cup Soccer Final set a new Twitter record for tweets per second, at 7,196. By comparison, the Men’s World Cup Soccer Final last year set the largest period of sustained activity during an event with over 2,000 tweets per second during the last fifteen minutes, and when news of Osama Bin Laden’s death was being reported, Twitter hit 5,106 tweets per second. TechCrunch also points out that the 2011 Super Bowl hit 4,064 tweets per second, the day of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami in March hit 5,530 tweets per second, and the Royal Wedding in April hit 3,966 tweets per second. The previous all-time high of tweets per second was the 2010 New Years Eve in Japan, at 6,939.
So, what’ll set the new record in a world where sports garners more 140-character chat than Osama Bin Laden’s death? Maybe if LeBron goes back to the Cavs?
