The World’s Most Expensive Photograph

Called “Rhein II” and taken by Andreas Gursky, the picture above is the world’s most expensive photograph. Sold Tuesday night at Christie’s for $4.3 million, Rhein II broke the previous record for the price of a photograph, which was set by Cindy Sherman’s “Untitled #96″ at $3.89 million. The auction doesn’t make clear why such a seemingly simple, somewhat boring picture would be sold for such a high price of $4.3 million, but hey, art is art.

    Not taking much away from art, but we have Starving countries,Schools hurting,Unemployed people,and art that sells for that amount of mon$y? Color me blind, but I can see a better use of that money.
    I know what you’re thinking, it wasn’t my money, OBVIOUSLY, but still, it’s just gonna sit there or excuse me, hang somewhere and do what?
    Have we as a society gone to not caring for others in some of our most darkest times?
    Yes I also know who’s to say that the buyer doesn’t give a lot to charity already, we don’t, But still, I think you get my point.

    I’ve taken better photos with my iPhone.  Art is subjective, yes, but in what world is that worth… oh nevermind.

    Part of the reason for the expense might be the size of the print. It’s 12′ 7″ by 6′ 9″. Larger than most cars.

    Still, much props to Nu_Wri456; seems like a stupid amount of money to spend on a pretty picture.

    I remember watching a documentary on Andreas Gursky about a year ago and not only does this guy’s “photography” heavily rely on image editing, he has an ASSISTANT who does the work for him!
