Artist Buys Landscape Paintings from Yard Sales, Inserts Monsters

Artist Chris McMahon buys cheesy landscape paintings from yard sales, then paints in monsters of his own.

Prints of two of the three are available on DeviantART.

    Hah! This is so good!

  • Jack Handy

    That is pretty badass

There are entirely to many crappy landscape paintings out there that lack imagination and are pretty much just visual background noise.

Now if only this guy could spruce up some of Picasso’s lame work.

  • Burroughs3

This has provided a solution to my current lousy landscape!

  • rah

That last picture must have been truly awful beforehand…

  • Ashley

the guy pays money 4 a landscape painting to make monsters on it when he could just make a landscape and put monsters on it. it’s called common sense.duh

  • http://www.facebook.com/Shannon.M.Briggs Shannon Briggs

He could also grow & weave his own canvas… You’ve gotta realise what’s the art, and what’s the medium.

  • joshua19an

You’re not very bright, are you?

  • Blowme

Would be good, if this dude could paint…

  • :D

Figuring out what monster will go with an already painted landscape is part of the fun.

  • Leocalderon_37

    totally stealing this idea. sorry

  • http://www.nurseslabs.com NursesLabs

Badass…but seriously creative :) They look like originals

  • ^Obvious_troll_0/10

would be good, if you could insult…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Janeen-Herr/1451443594 Janeen Herr

the kitchy draw for me is the “found bad art” and then the addition of “more over the top bad art” I think this is so original I shake my head wondering why no one has done it before?…oh! Yes! we now have Facebook to share our every thought and action with! Perhaps its been out there since velvet paintings of matadors and Elvis. And those really sad big eyed children with roses in the background.
Now I want to “find” bad landscape art and add collages of my friends and family incorporated into every tree, rock and cloud…

  • Anonymous

WHERE DO YOU THINK ALL THE BAD VELVET PAINTINGS CAME FROM? THEY WERENT EXACTLY ORIGINAL TO BEGIN WITH.

  • Anonymous

BUT THEN IVE SEEN THIS DONE BEFORE WITHOUT THE MONSTERS. THE ARTISTS IN MIND TOOK ‘BLANK’ LANDSCAPES LIKE THIS AND PAINTED AIRCRAFT, HOUSES, BOATS AND SHIPS, SMALL VILLAGES ETC., JUST WHATEVER THEY FELT THAT PARTICULAR PAINTING NEEDED.

  • http://www.fridaynightsmusic.com Mikecastillo27
  • Rachel Kern

to Ashley’s stupid comment about painting a landscape first – that one A) take a lot more time and B) not be as funny. Duh.

  • Designgrrrl

i agree with rachel. ashley doesn’t get it. *sigh* happy friday. you’re dumb.

  • Anonymous

8 people wish that this moron would deface Picasso? Wow… talk about a loss of respect for art…

  • Spitfire65745

who cares if he paints over bad landscapes or if people don’t respect the “oldies” of art. At least its not another jackass who dribbles some paint on a canvas and calls that art

  • Spitfire65745

who cares if he paints over bad landscapes or if people don’t respect the “oldies” of art. At least its not another jackass who dribbles some paint on a canvas and calls that art

  • XMalice

Did someone just seriously refer to Picasso as an “oldie”?

  • Steev Newton

There was an artist who did “Dog-heads”on old portraits years ago, and they are classed as works of art now, worth thousands

  • Steev

I’m more surprised that someone referred to it as art

  • Tentora

Picasso was not as good an artist as you think he was. His realistic paintings were terrible and abstract paintings were even worse.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sgelschus Shelley Gelschus

Really? Then why is he the most famous artist of the 20th century? Obviously everyone else is wrong and you are right. His abstract paintings are wonderful and full of symmetry. My favorite is Guernica.

  • SomeGuyYou’llHate

Art, like all things, is subjective. Someone can think Picasso sucks and someone can think Picasso is amazing. I personally enjoy this man’s work and would like to see him add his own creative spark to more pieces of art.

  • Riverdarkly

Yeah and a million people bought lil waynes album doesn’t mean he’s a amazing lyricist, it just means a million people are stupid as fuck. your logic is flawed.

  • Femke

he’s very famous because what he did AT THAT TIME, was pretty epic. It was new and people went for it, and because of that well you know the rest of the story
saying he’s a bad painter or not is always wrong tho, i dont like his work, but he was good at what he did.

  • Snakestrycker

how do you do that I have some crappy paintings that need some work

  • betakid

Picasso, like most famous artists, didn’t get famous until after he was dead. Just saying.

  • Janeek91

Its called a ready-made. If you dont know anything about art you dont have the right or the intelligence to criticize it.

  • baron

Probably the same reason Lady Gaga is famous….

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NXQMAFWUGWI623BIWCNE6LHRHQ Grace

Remember, it’s ALWAYS a good idea to argue on the internet!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Major-Zonk/100000451336586 Major Zonk

The guy buys the paintings Cheap at a garage sale because then he can Mash it up

with his own creation making the otherwise Boring landscape Interesting and Fun.

Your the One having a ‘ duh ‘ moment Ashley.

  • Uroplatis

    You can’t be serious?

  • Uroplatis

He better hope the original artist does not see this. He could get sued. The landscapes are Bob Ross knock offs and the monsters are not all that good either.

  • Dennis_D

As long as he doesn’t do it to the Nachtwacht.. Although it could use a wherewolf in there…

  • Anna

Wow. To not appreciate Picasso’s work, not necessarily LIKE it, is very ignorant and close minded, typical of today’s world. What he did for art was groundbreaking at the TIME, which is what propelled it to fame. He was (one of the first) to use this cubist technique in a time when abstract expressionism was just taking off. Just because you can’t appreciate the aesthetic quality of Picasso’s work does not mean HE’S the bad artist — that means YOU are.

  • Nguyenwallis

Guernica was great, but late in life Picasso was just churning out garbage and taking the mickey for money.

  • jkashdklj

    jackass

  • Robert

I can saw that I dont care for his type of art, but I wouldnt call him BAD, hes just not in my taste. I will admit that there are several pieces that I have seen that made me a little angry just for the fact that it seemed that really anyone could do it.

The art that REALLY makes me made, are the guys that take a blank canvas and put it in a frame… and thats it… I mean, fucking really? Just because no one did that doesnt make it an artist statement, just means no one had the balls to do nothing and call it art :)

SO I agree with everyone, and disagree with everyone.

I LIKE the posted images above, especially the first one :)

  • Robert

hehe, oops, I can SAY not saw… its late ;p

  • Zwenkwiel

yeah because good and bad, unlike appreciation, are completely objective affairs

grow a brain please, you pretentious parrot!

  • JaymeSayya

you have to have a true love for art to realize that this man is way better than Picasso. In passion and creativity alone.

  • Wes

I agree with Femke. And to betakid, just below: Picasso earned wealth and fame for his works long before he died in 1973. Maybe do a little reading before you spread misinformation.

  • Quinn

(Modern) art = “pffft, I could do that..” + “YEAH, BUT YOU DIDN’T”

  • Seantheroad

yeah, we all know of Picasso because he wasn’t as good an artist as we think he was.

  • Seantheroad

    ahahahahahaha. seriously now.

  • Eugene Sausage

wow why are you people fighting about art?!!!! who cares!

  • Safrewes

    moron

  • What?

If you base being a good artist on being able to create realistic looking pictures then Picasso was a fantastic artist.  He could draw extremely well from a young age.  He chose not to draw realistically.

  • to clarify

He chose not to draw realistically later on, I mean.

Have to agree with Quinn there. Most decent artists could probably recreate the Mona Lisa, but Da Vinci went down in history as an artist for inventing the Mona Lisa (for lack of a better term). Artists aren’t artists because of their ability but because of their creativity. If it originates from the creator’s mind, its art. It might be crappy art, but it’s still art.

And? It made him money. If people were daft enough to buy something that was rubbish that’s their problem.

  • IFuckedYourMother

you’re stupid as fuck. how can you insult somebody who has made a living out of something like that, when you couldn’t? the man who can’t dance, doesn’t like the music.

  • Liberty Jane

This is pretty much the coolest thing i have seen. Ever. Plus 6 respect points.

  • Lol

Anyone who bashes on Picasso obviously has never been to any of his galleries. grow up.

  • Jsarver08

    Wait… WHO’S PICASSO?

  • Jam3sd89

True.Lady Gaga does kinda look like a walking/breathing Picasso painting…

  • Jam3sd89

I agree I think Picasso is shit for the most part. Fame doesn’t mean anything it’s just a fancier word for hype.  While your obviously free to like Picasso, I don’t think most  people do I think they just buy into it. It’s really just an “Exit Through the Gift Shop” type of situation.

  • Gummybuddy

I really want one of these!!

  • dylanridley

Because people liked his paintings then? That’s like saying Justin Bieber is obviously amazing because he’s probably the biggest pop star at the moment. Rethink your logic.

  • Ren

There is  a difference between opinion and fact.  Fact:  Picasso was a revolutionary artist who became famous because he did something different and a lot of people copied him.  He was very creative and talented.  Opinion:  I don’t personally like Picasso that much, I find his works rather boring.  But then, I’m not into abstract or impressionist art that much.  While I can express my personal opinion (this is a free country after all) telling someone he’s a f**king idiot because he likes (or doesn’t like) Picasso is like telling him because he likes doritos and you don’t he’s obviously a moron and shouldn’t be allowed to eat chips.  If you don’t watch it someone will turn around and use that on YOU.  Before you know it we’ll all be eating carrots three times a day or something because someone who believes this got elected.  And how can you protest, after all, you started it.
That being said, I think this guys work is very funny and creative (although not entirely original, nothing truly is) and I wouldn’t mind having some prints of his work.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RHYQUQ3EEZDJD45T4JF4ASB7K4 Sarcastic

Shut up, its great. Fucking jews

  • Adolf

Still waiting for the Hitler arguments to come out.

  • the guy in the alley

    you don’t understand art, boy.

  • the guy in the alley

    you don’t understand art, boy

  • Andy

I went to a Picasso art exhibition today and his works are amazing. His realistic paintings are beautiful and he never painted abstract, he always had a subject. Although his ideas alongside artists that he worked with were the inspiration for much of the abstract movement he was not an abstract artist. He was a genius in every aspect of his art. If you go to an exhibition yourself I think you might change your opinion on Picasso.

  • ShelleyGelschusSucksAss

nobody gives a shit that you like Guernica. take your stupid input somewhere else.

  • http://dbakeca.com Dbakeca Italia

This is too great! Good job!

  • gues

circles are also full of symmetry… dosent make them impressive

  • Troll

I do believe that Tentora was not referring to Picasso’s Famous work but the shit TON of art work he made before and after his great works. After all, before every great master piece there was a lot of failure.

  • dalejand

    i’m a lover of tildy’s~

  • Akhenaten

People’s understanding of Picasso’s significance to art history is astounding. Dismissing his contribution would be like dismissing the Wright brothers for building a “crappy old air plane” or saying the American constitution is just a smell piece of paper.
Here’s a quick education… In 2003 Colin Powell presented his case to the United Nations for the invasion of Iraq. Behind his press stand hung a reproduction of Picasso`s anti-war mural Gurnica; but officials felt its presence might undermine their case so it was hastily covered before Powell gave his speech.Lesson learned: You might be the most powerful military commander on earth… but don`t f*ck with a Picasso masterpiece.
